The old idea about stuffing shoes with newspaper came about when people wore leather boots and drying would cause them to shrink. With a synthetic shoe newspaper will just form a big wad of damp material and will delay drying and prolong the conditions that bacteria just love. Better to dry them quickly with plenty of fresh air and UV.

To coin your earier phrase, this is just nonsense. You've clearly read this somewhere but never actually tried it. Of course the newspaper will form a 'wad of damp material' - why do you think that is?

If I put them in a cloth bag, can I put them in the washing machine ?
You can but you will clean them more effectively and quickly by hand with a short application of elbow grease, scrubbing brush and detergent/rinse water; and hang up to dry (and turn other way up after a few hours). I appreciate this (using a washing machine for shoes/trainers may be a generational thing, though.
