Arrested, charged, granted bail...

Erm don't they have to wait till the blood alcohol results come back? I didnt realise suspicion of drink driving meant a custodial sentence or court and bail immediately.

The intoximeter at the police station takes a legal reading and simply prints out the result straight away.

But then they are allowed to opt for a blood test, and since when did failing that test mean you get locked up?

AFAIK if you fail an evidential breath test you can't ask for a blood test as the evidence has been gathered.
You can ask for a blood test instead of a breath test. He will have been released on bail from the police station after being held in custody and charged which is how I read it.

That's pretty much it.

Handheld breath test at the roadside, that's the Intoximeter, the reading of which cannot be used in court, but it does give the officer enough grounds to arrest.

Nip to the police station - these things are time critical - and get the suspect to take another breath test there using the desktop CAMIC machine, which can be used in evidence.

The readings are usually very similar, so I think most suspects grudgingly accept the numbers are correct.

There would be an interview before charge, but that might be delayed if the suspect is so drunk as to be incoherent.

Rooney is quite a decent bloke by all accounts, well liked by his peers and has plenty of time for his fans. Let's be realistic here, footballers have good looking girls throwing themselves at them where ever they go and they are bound to succumb now and again like most of us would, including the foaming at the mouth moralists.

Drinking and driving is a bit naughty, but if everyone who had driven over the limit at some point was suddenly banged up for it there would be a lot fewer posters on CC for a little while. And I'm a fairly quiet sort of bloke, so I don't want to share a cell with Accy Cyclist....:okay:

I'm a bit concerned you think drink driving is common thing. Besides this wasn't a barely excusable 'I didn't know I was still over the limit' morning after driver. He was caught immediately after leaving a night club at 2am. He cannot have failed to know he was drunk and shouldn't be driving. I did some very questionable things when I was drinking, but even I didn't that.

Drink driving is a common thing, nowhere near as much as it used to be but it still goes on a lot and many more get away with it than get caught.

The evidence would appear that here has been a significant social change and drink-driving is not as socially acceptable as it was (that generation is dying out) and rates are falling. I'd be interested in what evidence you have otherwise.
It isn't as widespread or as socially acceptable as it once was, but there are still plenty who take a chance.

'Plenty' is a bit of a vague term. How about some actual numbers?
How do I know?

Neither does anyone else for that matter, the only stats available are for those who've been caught and as traffic police numbers have dropped significantly in recent years the chance of getting stopped are fewer. But my local papers still report a regular number who have been done, not all of them older generation either.

Used to be commonplace in a few country pubs in Ireland to ask who the driver was. They'd then be on free soft drinks for the time they were there.

More than once I've seen the same bar staff take the keys of drivers and arrange a lift for the driver, if they felt they shouldn't be driving due to drink.

Now, the have a few in one pub, then onto the next has made that harder to do.

If we ever had a means to test a driver before the car would move , a hell of a lot of people who think their ok to drive would be late for work..
So many just dont get it..those evening glasses of wine ..the lunch time drink..
Its so easy to be over..

Not sure which of those things I'd trust. We bought some of the single use ones for driving in France - legal requirement - when we got back, and after a bottle wine each and a few pints thought it would be a good idea to try em out. Nothing. Clearly we were over the limit and knew, but if you're relying on em to tell you if you're okay the next morning, you might get a shock...
