What do you use for ID when....

IIRC, it's funny how the acceptable ID for voting these days is less strict for the older folk.

Since these silly rules kicked in, I've had to revert to a postal vote, but at some point I might renew my expired passport to travel abroad again.

A long time ago, back in the eighties. I was asked for ID at the bank. I showed my army ID, MOD form90. This had my picture on it and was a legal document. This wasn't good enough, but they accepted my old style paper driving licence with no photo. The teller couldn't understand why I burst out laughing at her.

A bus pass has your photo on it, and you have to offer a fair bit of proof as to your identity when you apply, although I got mine through the local post office without any checks at all.

Could be something to do with the fact that I worked there.

Police state or not, I think we should all have digital ID now with everything on it including your meds records to show that you have paid into the NHS ect, the list could be endless, no ID basic treatment only or benefits.

I'm already a full licence holder, but if they won't renew it on medical grounds I can't get a another one for the same reason.

Polling stations accept bus passes, but the bank won't (necessarily), so I doubt that will cut the mustard.

If they don't accept photocopies I don't see why they would accept a scan on a screen. If I'm applying for a passport I've got the problem of finding someone who's known me for two years to sign the photo.

In this instance digital ID was the problem, but yes, it's time HMG stopped pandering to people who don't want ID cards.

A tax notification and a utility bill will do, but I don't want to have to carry them (or a passport) around everywhere just on the off chance that I need them once a tall time. It's about access to services at the point of need, not after it's too late. On this occasion I could make do with the £50 they would give me instead of the £100 the cheque was for, but that won't necessarily be the case.

Put another way, what have you got to hide if you don’t want ID.

The ‘nothing to hide, nothing to fear’ argument is a ridiculous one.

With it you are saying that there is not a single aspect of your existence that you would not freely divulge to people you don’t know and have no control over how they interpret your information.

You shouldn’t be so eager to surrender your civil liberties.

That reminds me. 15 years ago I used a UK photo driving licence when age checked buying alcohol in Honolulu.

I regularly get “age checked” by the self service tills at my local ASDA when buying alcohol (for my wife 😂). The assistant who comes to “ok” it never asks for proof of age, which, at 77yo, I think is offensive 😂

I believe all of the USA has the 40 rule. I was 51 and was asked for ID when buying booze in Virginia. I didn't have any but the person i was with did so i got my booze It all seemed very pointless since we were both clearly well over 21.
