Skyrim. I watched this last night as background noise as much as anything. I can see why people who like the genre would go for it and it did suck me in a little - 6/10, easy watching.

We decided to watch Elf.
God knows why...

High Hopes - an ancient Mike Leigh, full of characters ranting about the evils of Thatcher. Excellent. A surprising number of LOL moments, including Phil Davis's character's exchange with his loathsome spivvy brother in law:

BIL: (muttering to himself as he enters the room)...four-eyed moron.
PD: (bespectacled) You talking about me?
BIL: No - your sister.
PD: (in gesture rather than words) Fair enough.

Arguably a tad OTT Mike Leigh - the ghastly characters beyond pantomime/parody in their ghastliness - but thoroughly enjoyable for all that. 8/10 from me.

Shaft , the 2019 version.
I'm 15 minutes in.....garbage, juvenile, not funny, overacted, just garbage.

Gonna do something more interesting, like nailing my eyelids to the wall with bent rusty nails and a broken hammer.

"Hue and Cry" often regarded as the first Ealing Comedy. Whilst not quite up to the true greats like "Whisky Galore" or the "Ladykillers" both masterpieces of utter perfection, it was still a well crafted superior film, including a wonderful Alastair Sim, incredible cinematography, and a story which romps along nicely.

8/10 of pure entertainment

Last film I watched was Lizzie with Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart. It was about a murderess who bumped off her parents with an axe. To avoid getting blood spattered on her clothes, she took them off first. It was alright.

Bad Santa 2 - 5/10

Not particularly bad, but essentially the same film as the first only with less charm and more one liners. Kathy Bates is excellent as she always is, Christina Hendricks is shamefully underused and Billy Bob looks a bit bored by the whole thing. Worth it if only to switch your brain off for 90 minutes and enjoy a few laughs along the way.

Nowhere near as good as the first one, which is a work of sublime cinematic genius.

I'm not a fan of Christmas, but that is a good film. Also Scrooged with Bill Murray and The Hogfather (two-part TV special of the book by Terry Pratchett). All the other Christmas films? Bah humbug.

Die Hard.

It ain't officially Christmas until Hans Gruber has fallen from the Nakatomi building. A defining film of the action genre.

9/10.

PS, I'm distantly related to Alan Rickman on my Mum's side (she was also a Rickman).
