Western Approaches
Little known 1944 belter about merchant marine playing cat and mouse with German submarine. Lots of real sailors, so some of the acting is a bit wooden but the nautical details seem spot on. Tense, efficient drama and beautiful colour print online courtesy of Lavin.

Mission Impossible - Final Reckoning

A thoroughly disappointing film, and I say that as a fan of the previous movies.

It was not at all engaging, I felt nothing for any of the characters, and it was nothing like the preceding films in terms of comedy or action. Looong scenes without dialogue, but lingering, meaningful looks between characters, with overly-sentimental music. It felt every minute of its almost 3-hour runtime.

They were lazy with building the plot of the film. Instead of scenes laying out the plot, they relied on scenes where, for example, groups of senior military staff and the president would effectively discuss the upcoming scenario, how we got there and the probable outcomes. It was meant to be about the imminent end of mankind but never felt in any way that there was any real risk of it.

Even the use of the MI theme was a let down.

At least I only paid half price for the tickets.

A poor 4/10
