Western Approaches
Little known 1944 belter about merchant marine playing cat and mouse with German submarine. Lots of real sailors, so some of the acting is a bit wooden but the nautical details seem spot on. Tense, efficient drama and beautiful colour print online courtesy of Lavin.

Mission Impossible - Final Reckoning

A thoroughly disappointing film, and I say that as a fan of the previous movies.

It was not at all engaging, I felt nothing for any of the characters, and it was nothing like the preceding films in terms of comedy or action. Looong scenes without dialogue, but lingering, meaningful looks between characters, with overly-sentimental music. It felt every minute of its almost 3-hour runtime.

They were lazy with building the plot of the film. Instead of scenes laying out the plot, they relied on scenes where, for example, groups of senior military staff and the president would effectively discuss the upcoming scenario, how we got there and the probable outcomes. It was meant to be about the imminent end of mankind but never felt in any way that there was any real risk of it.

Even the use of the MI theme was a let down.

At least I only paid half price for the tickets.

A poor 4/10

Karate Kid: Legends - 7/10

Having only been introduced to the whole Karate Kid thing recently I was assured I didn't need to have seen any of the others to enjoy this. And I did: it's funny, modern and has a lot of neat nods to the first film.

My biggest criticism would be the soundtrack. How you can have a martial arts movie set in New York without Wu Tang or Beastie Boys is beyond me. Perhaps the creators thought that would have been too obvious, but I would disagree.

Smile :surrender: which turned out to not be the happy lighthearted viewing the name would suggest!

It's an ok film, gory horror that relies on the jump factor too much. The psychological aspect is quite good though.

The Brutalist - had really high hopes for this movie - sadly it was 3.5 hours of pretty much nothing. I can't say it was a poor movie because it was very well acted - but there just seemed no point to it all

Tonight on BBC 2 23:15 on chesil beach - one of the saddest most moving movies I have ever watched.
Do be prepared to tough it out though - the last 20 minutes make the movie - brilliant movie making - although the book is good as well.

Balls Of Fury - a redemption masterpiece of a film, a son sets out to be trained by a Master to battle his way through the tournament to eventually defeat the evil overlord, in turn also hopefully allowing his master to continue to train students in his home town.
For such a high stakes adventure, there is only one art of combat that is suitable, the art of....Ping Pong! :boxing:

Saw The Heretic last evening, Hugh Grant does excellent creepy. Good but felt it ended too soon with more background story needed.
