Yeah, I did notice it was on yesterday; but I was working, and by the time I got home, I just wanted some tunes & a glass of Red, to decompress.

The Possession

A paint by numbers story of a young girl possessed by an evil force that comes out of an old box that she buys at a yard sale.

Parents getting divorced - 👍
Mum's got a new boyfriend - 👍
Youngest daughter turns sinister - 👍
The help of a priest (or a rabbi in this case as the box is of Jewish origin) is sought - 👍
Big dramatic struggle to see off the baddie - 👍
It looks like mum and dad might get back together in the end - 👍

All the standard parts are there but there's not many moments that make you jump.

It's a poor man's version of The Conjuring.

Darkstar (1974)

John Carpenters directorial debut, it started as a student short then was later re-shot into a longer film and eventually received additional funding for a theatrical release. His co-writer Dan O'Bannon later wrote or was involved with many of my favourite sci-fi's. It follows the story of a long range scout ship looking deep in space for potential threats to human space colonization.

Its really impressive, been on my watch list for a couple of years - it was recommended because of having plot points around AI. I won't say more about the plot as there are some nice surprises if not twists. As for quality, its a 50 year old sci-fi originally made for less than $20,000, the sets and effects are incredibly impressive for what they are and theres a great amount of detail in the dialogue that really builds on what they can't show you.

Belgium based whistleblower drama by the actor Neil Maskell,I think Ben Wheatley has something to do with it as well...and it shows !
Just long enough at 1 and a half hours long to keep me interested and intrigued...I enjoyed it anyway. It was on late Sat night so probably on catch up somewhere.

The Sea Shall Not Have Them (1954)

Michael Redgrave and Dirk Bogarde in a tale of a downed Hudson bomber crew, who were carrying an important passenger, waiting in a dinghy off the coast of the Netherlands whilst a rescue launch searches for them.

From a time when the British film industry used to knock out stirring tales of giving Jerry a damn good bloody nose.

Stiff upper lips all round old bean.

Another excellent piece of direction from Clint Eastwood who I think is better behind the camera than in front of it. It helps that it's very well written and has an incredibly strong cast who all deliver powerful performances.

In Bruges (2008)

Another of those films I was confident will be good, but had never watched. Was not disapointed. I can imagine how pleased people were when they announced Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell were making another film with Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin) because their first one (this one) is absolute gold. Its a very darkly comic tale of two hitmen sent to Bruges to lay low after a botched hit. The characters they meet and interact with during their time just add to the film, no one seems to be wasted or irrelevent to the plot. Ralph Fiennes plays their suitably unhinged boss who even through voice alone is fantastic.

You're an inanimate f*****g object!
Never fails to get a chuckle.
Actually, come to think of it, the movie is full of quotable dialogue. Almost to Withnail & I levels

The Doors. I have it on VHS so have seen it a few times but first watch this century. Val Kilmer and Meg Ryan are excellent but the film is self indulgent pretentiousness. Not sure if that’s down to the director or subject.

Deathgasm - 10/10

This is exactly what it sounds like it should be: a B movie splatter flick with the soundtrack to end all soundtracks. A modern day Return of the Living Dead.

Children of Men on Iplayer. Seems to have been very well reviewed at the time but I wasn't particularly keen. Possibly the script let it down, had some really clumsy exposition at times and some scenes were poorly done. The action was exciting at points but also somewhat unbelievable at others. Good to look at though and a decent soundtrack.

I remember seeing that in about 2009/10. I don't remember much in detail but I do remember that I was slightly underwhelmed. one of those films where the plot sounds very exciting but they could probably have done more with it

Would probably give the book a go to see if it's any better.

It did score a few points for predictions of the near future - they'd had a pandemic, the UK government was pursuing mass deportation of immigrants and the detention centre had a mob of Islamists chanting Allahu Akhbar.
