Project Hail Mary
A sci fi adventure staring Ryan Gosling as an astronaut who awakes from a coma / hibernation to find his crew-mates dead and he himself with no memory of why he's there or what he's supposed to do. Turns out the Sun is dimming due to a strange astro-bacteria and he is on a last ditch mission to find a cure.
Anyhow the seemingly far-fetched threat is introduced and explained rather well so that it is all self consistent, plausible even and the journey and storytelling, interposing the adventure on the space ship with flash backs of the lead up back on earth are all rather well done. They do somehow get away with the unlikely mix of comedy and the really high stakes of mass impending human extinction, although there is a touch too much clowning around given the peril and time pressures. Like many modern films it could do with a half hour haircut, as it doesn't merit its 2:30 runtime, but in fairness it didn't fell quite than long. A big plus for me was they resisted the absurd modern fashion of sticking a lamp INSIDE Gosling's space helmet. Another was Sandra Huller, who I've not seen before, as the stern but very human, Earth based head of the project; she was genuinely superb in her role.
Anyhow a rather superior and thoughtful hard sci-fi story well worth seeing.
