I'm in the process of doing up my daughter's Kona Smoke to sell it. Ive removed some of the fancier upgrades and fitted a cheap Shi**no freewheel. When i came to set the adjustment of the limit screws in the RD the chain dropped gently between freewheel and spokes. And then caught on some stupid rivets holding the largest sprocket. No amount of furtling would persuade it to release. The quickest fix was to drop the wheel out and remove the freewheel. I knew it wasn't fully tight. And then my Shi**no freewheel remover wouldn't fit the Shi**no freewheel (insert angry emoji). So I had to resort to hammering the tool in. FFS.

Cursing, i then rode to my nearest bike shop to purchase a 'dork disc', AKA spoke protector. Honestly, ive thrown so many if these things away in my time, it feels like a cruel twist. But if this derailleur ever gets bent and overshoots, the chain can't be allowed to fall unto the spokes. Such an event would not be side-of-the-road fixable.

The bike shop mechanic laughed at me. They dont stock them. So ebay, £1.99 (inc postage).

Went to see if these were ready to collect from the Sorting office as it said it would be ready for collection today only to find it's only open for collection between 8 and 10 .

Just looked on the tracking and it's not been updated since it arrived at Peterboghorror yesterday

The commuter MTB has been treated to new tyres. Been running Schwalbe Land Cruisers 26 x 2.0 for a long time but the rear has gone 'wonky' - i.e. carcase has warped a little. This has happened now with two tyres as the front is a newer replacement. So, I still need a bit of 'knobbles' as my commute is a mix of surfaces, and I had a browse of Faulks Cycles pages. Came across the Schwalbe Silento - bit like a cut down Landcruiser - less tread, smooth rolling surface but has some side knobbles - it more like a gravel tyre.

Quick google, and some discounts, got two tyres, delivered, from Halfords, for £20.49

Bought a pair of 2nd hand shifters I've been using for months (well I have been using the right one). The left one is still sitting on my sofa. When my right 10sp Ultegra shifter failed earlier in the year on the commuter, I got hold of a 10sp 105 shifters from a mate. I've kept on pestering him to give him something for them, he remembered today. If I get round to converting my gravel bike to a winter bike (I think I only really need wheels, discs and guards) and will get away with the lower gearing now my mates have slowed down; I'll leave the odd shifters. If the commuter is pressed into service as a winter bike I'll either fit the left 105 one or scour ebay for 10spd Ultegra.

I also bought a Ciccerone guide for King Alfreds Way yesterday. I had previously bought the cycling UK book on the same route but it’s short on details for campsites and I’m not interested in wild camping, I want a toilet and shower preferably with a pub or somewhere to eat.
