Been working on the Giant Rock MTB that I picked up on Sunday.

Gone is the overly-heavy, but well put together, long back seat and backrest. They were putting all the weight beyond the rear wheel, affecting steering. Anyone want a Honda Goldwing seat back? It'll probably be on eBay later.

It's been cleaned up a bit, with a normal-ish saddle fitted. The shifters won't work as they've been snapped to fit onto the steering wheel (yep, a steering wheel instead of handlebars!), so we've got some different bits coming. Note that the steering wheel is welded to the fork steerer so we'd need new forks / cut the fork steerer in order to use handlebars and tbh we can't be bothered. Shifters are going elsewhere.

More work to be done when bits arrive ... photos then.

You are crazy.

You are crazy.
But not as crazy as the person who put it together in the first place!

Crazier is son no. 2, who's got a plan of what to do with it now we've got the balancing point issue sorted. Wait and see on 1st January ...

Oh, and the bike rides surprisingly well, not "splooty" at all @Reynard . @ColinJ - the seller had a stack of these type of 'builds' he's done over the years, which he'll be selling over the next few months.

Ah, NYD/Christmas TT's usually bring out the sillyness. Don't go too mad as your wife may put a break on the purchases. I'm keeping my eye out for a Colnago C60 that's not at the other end of the world.

I did assemble a bike with a steering wheel back in the very late 70's/early 80's when I was a teen using bits found in the local tip. Didn't work as the wheel was a flat one (Morris Minor?) and was affixed using the old quill stem bolt so was very wobbly. I think it lasted a couple of test rides before the bits went back where I'd found them.

Hah! It was more an observation of my own dubious abilities to stay upright...

As long as I breathe, I attack.
New grips on the boardman MX sport im planning to sell and also gave the wheels a once over for trueness then put some reflective stickers on the rims .I then drilled a hole through the rear mudguard so i could cable tie it to the rack as it rattles when riding .
It would be nice to shift it but if it doesn’t sell i am not fussed as its too nice a bike to give away and i may just strip my cx build as i can use most of the parts as spares for my usual commuter .

New tyres on order for the commuter too as i have had 2 flats in the space of a week so im changing to something a bit sturdier as they dont have the same thickness of rubber or protection i need now the levels of detritus on the way to work has increased .

I've done so much fettling over the last 3 months or so and seem not to have had the time to log in and talk about it.

Earlier in the year a friend passed my number on to another parent at his son's school, they passed it on again and suddenly I'm the unofficial mechanic for the bike-mad kids in the area. As a result I've worked on internally routed cables, cartridge wheel bearings, dropper seat posts and a few other things that I wouldn't have done otherwise. They bend wheels a lot so I'm getting lots of truing practice.

Today was back to what I'm more used to; a pre-winter service on @gavgav's Croix de Fer. Wheel bearings serviced, gear cables changed, everything adjusted up nicely, fixed the broken rear mudguard, a general check over and clean and it's ready for when he wants to put his carbon bike away for the winter.
