Main job was stripping and cleaning the rear wheel, also fitted a new tyre.

Last week the boss dropped off a bike for repair, which turned out to be quite beyond any help. When I reported this to him his response was: "We're going on holiday next week: do you have an alternative?"

I also found a very interesting donated bike today:

It has a standard 3/7 derailleur system and the rear is a 3 speed SRAM / Cassette hub. I'm used to the latter system but not having a three speed from derailleur as well.

There's also a button on the bottom of the left hand handlebar and after playing with this for a bit some careful investigation we found that it allows you to adjust the sweep of the handlebars from sit up straight to fairly well forward. That part is made by Bataavus and the bike has a sticker from a Dutch shop, so I'mwondering if that's a common freature in the Netherlands.

Frau Fritz wanted the moon, so we spent the morning in the garage and gave it to her.

Day 3 of putting cleats on summer shoes...#

Went out to the shed.
Moved the bike, pulled out the box of bike bits out to rummage through for a cleat, came across a couple of pairs of jockey wheels, remembered that shifting had become really rubbish, whipped out the stand and changed the chain, jockey wheels and cassette.

Cleaned up the Spa after 10 days tootling around the Netherlands. I had fitted a new chain and cassette before going, as the chain was 1% lengthened and the new chain wasn't happy on the old cassette. Looking at prices I was very glad I'd chosen 9 speed when I bought the bike, rather than 11 speed.

During my travels the gear change had been a bit dodgy in the middle of the block so today I realigned the hangar - problem cured!

Flushed with success I decided today was the day to take off the 35mm Schwalbe G Ones and fit the pair of 30mm Schwalbe Marathon Racers I bought ridiculously cheaply a couple of months ago.

A quick test ride suggested all is well so I will venture out to meet a friend on Monday with a slightly lighter bike.

An Unexpected fettle for me tonight, checking my Eastway over after this mornings ride I noticed the rear wheel wasn't spinning freely, a check revealed the rear wheel bearings were very tight so it was out with the cone spanners to loosen them off and reset them.

On the grasstrack bike (a Fuji Track) I've been using my Schwalbe CX commuter tyres. So tonight I had a play; on the front is a 35mm Schwalbe G One and on the rear a 27mm Vittoria Pave. I'd have preferred a narrower front but that's all I had spare apart from the knobbly CX's. We'll see how it affects racing, if at all, next time out.

More de-fettling than fettling; cranks and chainring taken off the Defy in preparation for a bottom bracket change. Those cleaned and then around the bike with enamel paint as needed filling in chips.

Cleaned up Mrs Gunks bike which hasn’t moved from under our open porch for about 4 years.

It was pretty grim, but only dust, no road grime so soap and warm water bought it up reasonably well.

Sadly the chrome has suffered but some wire wool has improved the bars slightly. It will need a new chain, but after some air in the tyres and some oil on the drive train it rides nicely. Mrs Gunk promises me that she will use it now.

I was also given this today from my MIL who no longer rides it, riding it home was a bit of a drama due to a rusted link, luckily it was only about a mile door to door.

Cleaned it up (only soap and water, not going to get stuck in to this one) and stuck a new chain on it, luckily I had an unused brand new 7 speed chain that I hadn’t used on another project, it was too short but managed to find 6 extra links (it‘s worth not throwing stuff away) so riveted them on and it worked a treat.

So costs zero and rides really well, now for sale £90
