What plans have you got for when you retire?

Following on from the other retirement thread, I wondered what people who have not go there yet, were planning on doing, although I am only 49, I still think its a good idea to plan these things, so I have started to make a list of all the things I want to do when I get there...

So please feel free to add any ideas you may have as it might be something I have missed! Here is my list so far....

Build myself an N Gauge Railway , with a Swallow Livery InterCity train on it
Build the garden railway, all the stuff is in the attic waiting to be used.
Aston Martin, always wanted one, and hope to get one when I retire
Go and see the North Lights, when we went last time it was cloudy!
Visit Antarctica or see an Iceberg some where
Radio Controlled Spitfire
Start RC Helicopter flying again
Motorbike Track Day
Visit Japan again
Travel Glacier Express train
Visit Norway
Start modelling again, I am collecting Tamiya kits and I want to do the Enterprise Aircraft Carrier model again , in a diorama at sea..

So plenty to get on with.

The absence of cycling is deliberate

Today we become the owners of a plot in Scotland and absentee English landlords to about 10 billion midgies.

Build retirement home with workshop, pottery studio and gym and downstairs annex for visitors and for when we become infirm.

Cycle, walk, kayak on the loch, visit places like Tiree, ski and ski tour for as long as we can.

Brew beer. Read. Write. Socialise with neighbours. Listen to music. Do an OU degree in music history.

Having dabbled in Graham Farish N gauge on & off since my teenage years I may be tempted to build an 80's themed layout again (lots of Britsh Rail blue) so can agree to that one.

I intend to cycle lots and will need a retirement house with a generous double garage so I can tinker with my Landrover/s

Obviously I will also be able to spend a lot more time with my lovely wife. Isn't she lucky...… :smooch:

I plan to do a few credit card based bike tours (not keen on laden cycling). Almost certainly ride to the French alps where we go every July. Bit of gardening, more cycling, declutter.

But most of all, not have do do anything I don't want to do.

Carbon fibre... LMAO!!!
At 41 and the health problems I already have I firmly believe that come retirement age, I'll either be 6 foot under or wheelchair bound.
I never had high expectations in life even when I was younger. As long as my kids are happy, have a roof over our heads (our council house qualifies), I can go camping now and then and I can continue cycling, I'll die a happy man.
My biggest plans in life are to go bike touring in the UK. If I can do that then :okay:

On the other hand, I do a physical job and am in great shape for 55, if I retired then I'd go straight to the pub and wouldn't last long.:okay:

Indeed. Was speaking to a GP friend other day and he said many of his patients experienced a quick deterioration in health post-retirement.

He attributes this to several factors but the two common ones were lack of physical movement and social/mental interaction. Many people have lonely personal lives and thrive on work connections and once these are lost, depression and other mental illnesses start to grow.

Read and learn more.
Travel more.
Walk more.
Immerse myself more in the natural landscape.
Not have to pretend and pander to people I'd really rather not be with.
Learn to sail.
Become a better shot (clays).
So many courses I'd like to do, too many to mention.
Own an old pick up truck.
Plus lots of other things too numerous to mention.

Just need to keep it running for another 20-odd years until I can retire

We're pre-empting it. Downsizing to get the money out of the house before we love it so much we never leave. This wipes the mortgage and debt off entirely and we start saving like mad. The savings will pay for the final house in a few years, a good padding of our pensions, and some perks along the way such as cruises and marriage.
When we retire we get the final house somewhere nice with a small workshop and good cycling links.
Then it's exercise, days out, weekends out, holidays, events and stuff. We can enjoy being a couple in a way two full time workers, one on shifts, on on 9-5 can never do.
I think I'll update the programming skills and keep my head busy writing small programs for modest income too.
