What's the point of cats?

Cats are easier to look after than dogs -they find their favourite chair which is in exactly the right part of the house for the temperature they demand. They come looking for attention when they want it...

Dogs are infinitely more loving but do require much more time commitment on the part of their owners.

Until a month ago we were the very happy owners of two dogs and a cat (our Cavalier Spaniel passed away on 4th August). He was deaf and blind in one eye and had heart problems. Our other dog is an adorable but very reserved King Charles. We were burgled on the night of 9th March. Neither dog uttered a sound; the Cavalier seemed to notice nothing and the KC was petrified. It was the cat who, once the kitchen door was opened, came up the stairs and miaowed outside our bedroom door to alert us. We think she caused the burglars to scarper as they left things behind that surprised us. We now call her the Watch Cat.

May I just say I didn't start this thread. It was a posting on another thread about cats which one of "the owners" has decided should be a thread of its own.

However, I stand by my original point that cats are a bit pathetic. If we were to take the dog as the default position of a loyal and true companion, then a cat would have to be considered the autistic brother/sister of the family. So yes, you could say I'm not feline pleasantly disposed to them.

The original thread was from a concerned cat owner asking for advice. I'm not surprised that the Mods split the less pleasant anti-cat stuff onto its own thread; your posting on there showed a complete lack of empathy and was pretty insensitive. If it was supposed to be funny, it was misplaced humour. You weren't alone either with some ill-timed and ill-thought-out thread spoiling there from others who probably ought to know a bit better.

As the owner of a well-loved cat, who's now in her 18th year and starting to get a bit frayed around the edges, I'm pleased about the thread move. You can be as insensitive as you like here, but it leaves us cat-owners to give advice on the original.

Is it just me or are cats shoot? What is their purpose? A dog might rescue its owners from a fire by alerting them at night while a cat would run away and find another soft touch to take it in. We got one as we were starting to get field mice coming in but the cat is bone idle and I fail to see what it gives us back for the constant take, take, take. We lost it over the weekend and I've just found it on the other side of the garden fence whining and too stupid to realise it could turn round and walk out of the bush it had become trapped in. I was hoping we'd seen the last of it but no. I feel cats have become superfluous to requirements in the 21st century and unless anyone can tell me what earthly good they are, I'm going to propose a mass cull.

Good point. But you could equally ponder - what is the point in, say, kids?

Well said +1

PaulB is right in one sense- there is a book called "All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome" using cute pics of cats and their self-absorbed feline traits to explain to "normal" peeps what Asperger's is. At least one, probably a few of my family have Asperger's and yes, some of the traits can be compared with most moggies.

For the record, I prefer cats but quite understand why some like dogs.

thank GB you for saying what everyone was thinking about these insensitive posts.

I suppose every net community has its share insensitive and callous members . Fortunately careful and sensitive moderation on here has prevented them from spoiling this community for everyone else.

I find it strange that some members can be so deliberately rude hurtful and insensitive to others when those same people they are upsetting would gladly offer any help ,advice and support to them in spite of their insentive behaviour and comments

They crap in our garden, wail disconcertingly at night and hunt the little birds that alight on out birdtable. I'm also allergic to them so I become wheezy and my eyes stream when I'm in a room with one.

What's not to like?

does this community need a member like PaulB ?

Far be it from me to defend that Scouse git () but the in second link he said he imagined Yenners as David Brent (fair point!) and I couildn't see a quote by him at all in the third.

Well I think you'll find not everyone was thinking that way since many have agreed with me. And could you point out where I was "rascist" (no idea what that means) in Yenrod's two posts, particularly the one where I was attacking him for being racist? We could equally wonder if this predominantly cycling community needed a member who has gone a long way to wrecking the proposed LeJog ride with his frankly stupid and hysterical outpourings over "risk assesments" and then taking his ball home because of a mild criticism that wasn't even a criticism.

Whats the point of anything?Whats the point of people? And do things even need a point?

May I just say that as pointed out earlier, I didn't begin this as a thread and so that title does not come from me?

Cats are great.

Being brought up around dogs because my dad loved them, we have had a variety of them. Having a dog was like having a child, you couldn't leave them alone because they would fret.

My own dog used to love eating its own poo then would come and lick your face, disgusting.

Billa the cat is cool, she looks after herself, we can go away and leave her with a cat sitter and she's fine.

Cats are great if you don't want to be tide down and trapped by a dog.
