Yep. Relatively recently. Road/fast bikes were always drops. Seen as serious.

Fast road bikes yes. General road bikes, no. There have always been flat bar road bikes around. The "shopping" type bikes if nothing else - think Granville's bike in Open All Hours.
Entirely agree. However, my flat-bar road bike is a conversion of a "racer" that has no capacity for guards/racks, tyres max 25mm...you get the idea. Definitely NOT a tourer.

I don't find sharing the road with cars pleasurable at all, to the extent that my road bike hasn't been used for a year or two now. I'm only keeping it just incase something crops up as it didn't cost me a deal.

Well wasn't referring to shoppers ;) see bassman's initial post I was responding to.
Mind you have long thought I'd be more interested in toxic British Cycling if they had given Hoy and co shoppers or tourers to race, with a self-made brew half way round.

Another great bike that’s just a giggle to ride is a Brompton. I was rather stupid selling mine earlier this year, I now really regret it so I’m currently looking for a replacement now the prices have simmered Down.
