It means don't cast off your coat until May is out. However it doesn't mean the month of May but when the mayflower is blooming. (Mayflower is better known as hawthorn.)
Your useless fact for the day.

to save me googling for it when does Hawthorn blossom then . no good putting up half an answer

For those that follow the 'protect the knees' method how do you feel on 3/4s?
Er, knee-protected?

Really, that's the thing - it is like wearing shorts but not getting cold knees. I had overshoes on yesterday so there was only about a 3" gap between the top of them and the bottom of the 3/4 legs. My calf muscles were keeping warm enough from the effort of riding, but they did start to feel a bit cold while I was fixing a puncture so I took shelter behind a wall to do the repair.

I think the 3/4s are ideal between about 4° and 12°. Any warmer, wear shorts with or without lightweight legwarmers. Any colder, wear tights or shorts with heavy-duty legwarmers (though I find that cold wind blasting through shorts isn't exactly the greatest sensation that I've ever enjoyed).

I was actually wearing normal shorts today for a bit of a walk. Fantastic weather in London

Shorts for me today; it was lovely today on the south coast today. Felt nice to get the legs out for the first time since I started riding.

Great, only thing you have to watch is you may need to insulate your lower leg so you don't get cold feet. I've got some 3/4 tights which are light weight lycra, they are good all the way up into the low-20s. Thicker & fleeced stuff can be used down to about 5C, bellow that you might find complications with cold feet (a 0.33C drop in blood temp can cause your feet to go from toasty warm to numb with cold!)

I've had mine on a few times now & the Tortoise hasn't even woken up yet! (Thats usually my sign that spring is here!)
I even opted for the fingerless gloves the last 2 days - long may it continue......probably till tomorrow is my guess!
