Winter is on it's way. Which type of tyre / wheel combo would you use?

When it is icy the ice tyres come out to play, otherwise it is the same tyres all year round - Marathon Plus. I've never even thought of using a different wheel for winter.
The main reason I use cheaper rims in the winter, is because of the increased chances of hitting something you couldn't see in time, in the dark. I've trashed nice rims a few time.

I've just moved to the AW2 hard case lites, very happy so far, not running out of grip, and they claim to have decent puncture protection.

I heard a lot of stories about the Hard cases sliding, but never had any problems myself, but I did notice that the A1's seemed more secure when I moved to those.

Excellent, very mature seeing as I don't think my comment is out of line with other posters, but don't let that stop you.....

Or slow down a bit, so you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear?
Now he isn't listening maybe we can have a sensible, grown up conversation?

From the OP I thought he was worried about grip, punctures and ruining his best wheels by using them on the salty winter roads. Turns out he actually just wanted us to say he should use cheap wheels so he can continue to ride dangerously in the dark and pretend he is winning a race. He obviously isn't going to listen to any advice that he should perhaps slow down and ride in a manner which suits the conditions.

Depending on the bike,
Vittoria Rubino Pros
Conti Gatorskins
Schwalbe Land Cruisers

Which is what they run all year round.
Of the three, I reckon the Gatorskins are the better all round tyre and are probably what will replace the Vittorias when needed.

my winter bike is my Surly Long Haul Trucker ... full mudguards, dynamo lights to be sorted by the end on November

the current tyres are the Continental Comfort Contact which cam e with the bike (I bought it new and thats what was supplied)

I will however switch to Schwalbe Marathon Supreme (I had a pair of these fitted on a Bridgestone MB-2 that I converted with drop bars and bar end shifters ... have sold that bike now)

The Schwalbe Marathon Supreme are brilliant ...

on my S-works, I have Continental 4 seasons's but will change those later to Schwalbe Durano plus (bestest tyres that I have used for daily commuting .... bomb proof and much better than gators
