And the guitar playing is unformly excellent; he's more understated than the usual rock god suspects, but what he does is usually flawless (and often very difficult to do).

Johnny Marr is a fantastic guitarist, I agree.

This was clear when he had a short time playing with The The, then he was very impressive.

Didn't know he'd played with The The. Mind, it makes sense as Johnson was another arch-miserabilist.

(In the style of Will Ferrel in Elf) Matt Johnson! I know him. I know him!

Or....Matt Johnson's then girlfriend was the daughter of a friend of my dad. I met him once or twice when I was a teenager. The song-writing wasn't a front, he really was that dark. And he HATED Thatcher.

nah. It's the usual thing for me, I get the humour and I recognise that they're a clever band, but I just don't like the noise they make.

+1 but it's not a noise, it's a catatonic drone.

I didn't even put my CD on e-bay. I just gave it to someone who liked them and told him never to speak to me again.

Marr played on the superb "MindBomb" album.

Some of Johnson's lyrics there are just spot on for 2009:

"But God didn't build himself that throne
God doesn't live in Israel or Rome
God doesn’t belong to the yankee dollar
God doesn't plant the bombs for Hezbollah
God doesn't even go to church
And God won't send us down to Allah to burn
No, God will remind us what we already know
That the human race is about to reap what it's sown

The world is on its elbows and knees
It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds
Armageddon days are here again"

That was Johnny Marr! Superb album. That's another pub quiz question answered!

Think I'll have to go play some The The. Heartland is a classic, perfectly crafted gem and just about every other The The song has some stand-out feature or other. You might not like what the guy's saying but he knows how to say it well.

Same with The Smiths. Don't worry if you don't like them, they're not talking to you. For those who were listening, no one else said it quite so well.

Great stuff, but I've had to move The The to the best band thread, can't have them here unless someone gets the wrong idea.

Glad to see a few mentions for U2.
I know someone who was in a punk band many years ago and they encountered U2 when they were unknowns and had occasion to, as he put it, 'sort them out'. You will be pleased to hear that at least fame hasn't changed Bono, he was a gobby egotistical twat full of his own self-importance then too, although as someone said elsewhere in this thread he has added sanctimony to his attributes since.

See, this is what annoys me about The Smiths, the fact that you apparently have to be a bit special to get them, and if you don't get them, you're not listening properly, or something. I agree they were good at what they did, but I've listened to them (I even tried to enjoy it) and it doesn't do it for me.

I think it's more about being able to recognise and enjoy great talent for what it is. I think Morrissey is a twat, and I don't agree with his bleak take on the world, but The Smiths music is tight, clever and witty. Just as Queen made some great pop tunes but Freddy Mercury was an Ar** Ho**. If you can detach yourself from the aspects of the composition that don't apply to you it fees you up to enjoy the rest.

There are limits though. I knocked back free tickets to see Oasis because I just hate Liam Gallagher too much! ;0)
