30 minutes in a car from York gets you to Wakefield, where I now live.
From here you can do 5500ft of climbing in maybe 60 miles, including the legendary Holme Moss TdF climb. Fantastic cycling country with spectacular views.

That sounds good . Do you have a strava route ?

The truth is that apart from around York, Yorkshire is absolutely riddled with hills so it is more a case of having to work out how to avoid them rather than how to find them!
Think he should give it a go though.
It's only a distance of 327 metres

Depends how far the OP wants to drive to get close enough to the hills. As others have said, there are gazillions of good hills in Yorkshire

The closest are the Wolds. Close enough to just ride there from York. The other suggestions are probably too far to ride there (well you'll spend most of the ride getting there and back on the flat) so driving closer to them would be sensible. If OP is happy to drive from York there are loads of options. If he wants to just jump on his bike and ride some hills then it's the Wolds

Or around Doncaster - it's not exactly Alp like round there either!

Back up north
If you go north towards the moors, look on the map for anything called a 'bank'. Some of them are not all that long but all of them are steep.
(Not Sutton Bank though, too many lorries on it that probably shouldn't be attempting it).

Or Rosedale Chimney. I found that quite hard to walk up!

Further along the same escarpment as Sutton Bank is Boltby Bank.

Safer for cyclists, and quite well used by keen roadies if my two visits are anything to go by.

As has been said, around York is as flat as Yorkshire gets. However, you can find the Wolds nearby which offer some nice undulations, if not the best climbing in the county.
Have a look at the 'standard' 75 mile route here, which has a couple of decent climbs, although nothing too severe and which is easily cycled from York (although the first 15 miles or so are virtually flat): https://www.ukcyclingevents.co.uk/events/wiggle-vale-velo-sportive/
The 'short' route features essentially just one long climb and that's it, so it's probably not what you're looking for, while the 'epic' route adds miles but not any notable climbing.

Or you could pop up the A1 to Ripon and use one of the tastier looking routes here. Greenhow Hill is a beast and needs treating with respect though.
