I once observed a very good fight between a Glaswegian chap and a native of Aberdeen, who were arguing over in which of the two towns the deep fried mars bar was invented.

The mars bar question was never answered to my satisfaction, although it became quickly apparent that the Glaswegians are more adept at hand to hand combat (or forehead to nose combat).

You are determined to find nothing positive about the place aren't you? How's the hall i th wood museum?
Ps - you do know the orkneys can be kind of dark and cold?

Hahaha no Bolton does have a lot of redeeming features, a superb museum, fantastic heritage, the moors over Belmont and Rivington, (I can see Winter Hill from the back bedroom window), and even a lifesize bridge made from meccano at Nob End* to name a few.

As for Orkney, probably will never happen TBH, and even if it did it would definitely involve a lot of research and time spent up there before hand, it certainly wouldn't be a rash decision.

PS: I can see Hall i'th Wood from my back garden as it's only about 200 meteres away. TBH though I've not been in since I was a kid, but Mrs Smoo took Miss Smoo in last summer and said it was very good. It does seem to keep funny hours though.

*note to the mods, Nob End is a genuine location in Bolton ^_^

According to my sources, Haven Chip Bar, near Aberdeen, at Stonehaven. Now called the Carron Fish Bar. Mid 1990's.

I was actually born in London but we left when I was about a year old. Whenever I go back there the people seem a bit 'loud' compared to other parts of the UK.

I moved out of London for a while and though I pretty often returned for business it did seem a bit loud/overwhelming sometimes. You get used to it in no time of course if you live there.

I was born in Nelson. Once counted as one of the richest towns in the country, it was just starting to fall apart when I was born. It would be difficult to be proud of it now although it has nice outlying villages and countryside.

I'm very proud to be from Lancashire though.

Family all Brummies, Mum and Dad moved just down the road year before I was born to Coventry. Lived there until I was 22 (1986).

Mum and Dad now live in Cumbria, as do my sister and partner, I'm down in West Somerset, nobody left in Cov, but plenty of relatives still in Brum, so call in there on the way to Cumbria. Haven't been back to Coventry in the last 15 years.

You mean when a couple of gangs had a dust up?

Hardly a riot... Why the need to exaggerate and okay it up, with an ethnic overtone?

I don't recall you being in my kitchen watching it out the window. No, it was definitely just me and the Wife and there was most certainly a riot going on outside.

As for exaggeration, and ethnic overtones, what else could it have possibly been when it was a violent flare up of a very long running fued between the Sikh and Muslim communities?

It matters not as it was almost twenty years ago and I have not lived there for a very long time.
