Doesn't take many people having fisitcuffs at once the meet the lawful definition of a riot. You could fit them comfortably in a moderate sized living roon.

I was born in Colchester, which is apparently the oldest recorded town in Britain.

Indeed... but Colin_p seems obsessed with there having been a massive religious/race riot in Slough in 1997. Everyone else seems to suggest it was a dust up between gangs, with some outside gangs from London involved.

Hardly a Toxteth or Brixton - it doesn't even get a mention in the Wikipedia English Riots page...
You can hardly blame Colin_p 'being obsessed', or even 'taking a great interest' in it, it happened outside his front window. Your interest in it, to the point of trying to look it up on specialist pages on the internet, is more difficult to understand.

Perhaps if you live in sleepy old Slough a few lads smacking each other around is of more significance than similar events elsewhere in the country, where public displays of combat are more normal?

Either way, give the guy a break. Big deal. I bet User could argue with herself if left alone for five minutes.

Leicester.

When I left Leicester it was a nothing city, hiding in plain view in the much-ignored East Midlands. Unlike un-loved Birmingham (where I moved), Leicester was quietly ignored at worst, and best, occasionally lightly ridiculed, becoming an EastEnders plot device for disposing of unwanted characters. Despite the crisps, Rugby team and Roman history, it lacked a handle.

Then it became the centre of the Jain religion in Western Europe. Big deal. Then it became the self-proclaimed sporting capital of England, with successes in Rugby, Football and Cricket in the same year. But only in local eyes. Finally, in addition to a bolstering adequate shopping centre and some decent visitor sites (Space Centre), it achieved temporary infamy by becoming a by-word for racial integration. As the fires burned in Bradford, the factories, shops and parks of Leicester still showed how different cultures could live and work together, largely successfully.

However, as foreigner-hating moved towards greater social acceptability, Leicester had some aces up its sleeve. OK, not Aces, more like Kings. One King, buried beneath a council car park for safe keeping, raised his head above ground, and moved a short distance to the Cathedral (never likely to achieve TripAdvisor immortality on its own). However the excitement was only going to last a short while, there being not enough council car parks in Leicester for the cathedral to rival Westminster Abbey, but along came another couple of Kings, a non-hereditary one called Ranieri, his seat of power being the King Power Stadium, and suddenly Leicester has achieved immortality. 5,000-1 odds, records broken, and the metaphor dictionary re-written to include "doing a Leicester".

Now I'm proud!

Buckfast. Famous for Buckfast Abbey and of course Tonic Wine. The town itself has nothing to offer the locals, so lots of my generation moved to the cities or that there London. There used to be 3 factories - (tannery, pasty factory and carpets) but all have closed. I can walk down the street or into the co-op and not recognise a soul.

Proud? No. The generation that me me proud have all died, my Gran included. The ones that are left are mostly benefit scroungers.

Whilst I can't remember the details I do remember than at one point in time there were disturbances/unrest in Slough at the same time as there were in Bristol, and it may have been centred on an old ice rink/pool/cinema (big building just off the A4). I don't remember the year or details, but after I had moved to Bristol.

I can't believe the penny has just dropped with me....was there a "row going on, down near Slough?"

Yup...I had some Morecambe Bay shrimps in clarified butter in a nice London restaurant last week and they were flippin' gorgeous
I like Morecambe, or 'Bradford-by-the-Sea' as it was sometimes called
I can just about remember the Super Swimming Stadium standing, & the Midland Hotel being open (if run down) in the early 1970s

During my irregular visits in the 80's/90's, I watched the Midland decaying ('ditto' the Winter Gardens), & was very happy to see it renovated & reopened
Seemingy, the 'W G' will be fully refurbished soon?
We wanted to stay there, during a visit for the 'Cross Bay Challenge' one year (1/2 marathon, from Flookburgh, over the sands, to Hest Bank), but the Hotel was full

Three of my books, & the 'Great White Palace' is about Burgh Island Hotel (Devon)
