A day for me today, coulda done, shoulda done so much but kids been at home for 2 weeks...suns kinda shining, im off out, local country park...
Snipe, hunkered down on the edge of a lake by reeds.
Jack snipe, ironically had been within 20 ft of me, only saw it when it was startled away by new arrivals in the hide. Notably lighter build than a snipe.

I keep revisiting (in my mind) the snipe in saw.
Hunkered down near reeds and the waters edge, theres a lot of trees and woodland in the surrounding area.
I keep reminding myself how chunky it was (what I could see of it) and keep thinking woodcock ?
The jacksnipe by comparison (yes its smaller than a snipe) was very slim and.slightly built.

Its a moot point but lovely to think it may have been a woodcock ?

I asked AI to show the 'real' me.
New camera which I can't quite understand as it's got so many buttons and settings. Pleased with the results so far.

We have a birdbath on the grass which is used by the magpies and pigeons. There have been some goldfinch visiting but they don't stay long enough for me to get the camera ready, so it'll have to be the magpie.

The rat trap that caught a hedgehog a few days ago had a male blackbird in it this morning.

The bird can't possibly be heavy enough to trigger the spring that closes the trap, so it must have been pecking hard at the food I had used as bait. I released it apparently unhurt, and watched it fly away. No photos, as I didn't want to disturb it by moving the trap.

Couple hours riding around the normal haunts..
Quite probable cuckoo flying overhead. Tail too long for a pigeon.
Blackcap in woodland.
LOTS of Robins, theyre very vocal with that liquid song, you can hear them everywhere.
A pair of dabchicks (Little Grebe)
LOTS (too many) magpies, counted 20 in one field alone.
Woodland is awash (by ear at least) with birdsong, just so hard to see it.
Stood for 5 minutes watching a woodpecker hole after a bluetit flew in...of course it didnt come out once I stood there with a camera.

Playing with my old Nikon D40 and manual mode, need to get a card reader, got plenty of shots but can't do anything with the atm.

I don't know the D40 but can't you connect to a computer and the camera should switch to "Mass Storage Mode" (where the camera appears as a disk drive on the computer allowing you access to the card in the camera ie copy photos). Once connected some cameras need to be switched off then on again to auto switch to "mass storage mode".

Aha, hadn't thought of that (although it's fairly obvious really)
Had it 15 years in should think, never really got on with it or used it.

European Green Woodpecker on the grass this evening. Last year a fairly frequent visitor but not seen one since last autumn.

Feeding on ant nests but I think they are all pretty empty/dead at the moment (unless ants are all sleeping deep in the nests.

They (Green Woodpecker) seem to prefer or visit more regularly when the grass is cut, maybe as that makes the ant nests more apparent?

Yesterday we saw the following wildlife in our allocated area.
Robins, blackbird, long tailed tits , great tits, thrush, squirrel and then overnight muntjacs and hedgehogs .

Will try to get pictures today.

I love nature so we are we as humans so intent on destroying it 😡
