Did an old Chester route, nice and quiet, usually the mid-point's the cathedral but there was a run on today so it was a few 100 yards short.

Then with about 30 miles left the gears started acting up, couldn't get 6,7 & 8 and 1 to 5 were iffy.

Then at about 99 1/2 miles the cable snapped, god knows where the end went, I locked the derailleur into 4th for the last bit, hopefully it's just a cable and housing replacement.

not tiagra 4700 ?
they are known for cables snapping inside the shifter , you may have to take the plastic plate off the the bottom of the shifter to fish out the cable if its jammed in there .I had the same thing happen on a sportive and i was stuck in fastest gear at the back so i was in small small for the rest of the ride .

Shimano Claris R2000s. The cable wasn't in great shape either, it's been in since atleast 2023 and was frayed and splitting at the derailleur end. I actually thought it was that end of the cable getting gummed up in the housing, so for it to finally snap in the shifter was a surprise. 😅

I think these shifters have a plastic plate too so I have a look when I get a new cable.

Shimano recommend fairly frequent changes of inner cables for all their STIs, something like every 2500 miles. I change mine every year after suffering a similar event to yours.

I carry a spare cable after completing the second half of a century in the Dales on two gears - lesson learned. They weigh nowt and only take 10 minutes to change.

Yes I think I will be changing it annually from now on. Looks like it did about 2995 miles from installation.

Although it might not have been new when it was installed. 😆

It depends how it breaks, and the model of STI you have. I've seen examples in this forum that took days and special tools just to get the nipple end out of the shifter.

That's probably true of any issue if you're unlucky enough. If you have a small screwdriver to remove the bottom port (or just leave it loose - why on earth is it screwed in anyway?) then 90% of the time you're fine with a cable replacement.

Between my bikes and riding companions, I've probably changed half a dozen without a problem. I had road bike, tandem and son's bike all go within a month a while back.

More canal, the mud seems to have dried up, so no need for the pressure washer today  The only thing is it's now set like concrete and is a bit jarring at times. Went South on the Oxford canal to

its junction with the Grand Union at Braunston

One thing about canals is that navigation isn't too tricky, above left to Coventry on the Oxford canal, right to Leicester or London on the Grand Union or behind me along the shared Oxford / Grand Union to Oxford or Birmingham.

Napton Juntion - straight on to Oxford via the Oxford Canal or right to Birmingham on the Grand Union :okay:

Luck must have been on my side today as when I got home I noticed a thorn in the rear tyre, picked it out and it promptly went flat. Checked the inside of the tyre and found another one, both of which must have been sealing their holes. Just as well it wasn't on the ride as the yellow beast has nuts holding the wheels on, so that kind of rules out swapping inner tubes, unless I take a 15 mm spanner with me :okay:
