This weekends cycling shenanigans.
Out of the door Saturday morning at a complete and utter ungodly hour to cycle 9 miles to Meopham for the Oasts & Coasts 300km Audax.
Basically, an anti-clockwise route around the Sussex/Kent borders and coast. A fabulous but sometimes arduous route. Some brilliant roads, lanes and paths giving the legs, mind, body and spirit a thorough workout. The first half of the ride offering rolling terrain with a few thigh busting climbs thrown in for good measure. A slight respite of traversing the flat Romney Marshes before hitting the climbs again. Capel Le Ferne in Folkestone never gets easier, but a drop into Dover along the coastal path offering wonderful views sure makes up the the hard work, only for another big climb to hit you, up and around Dover Castle to St Margaret's Bay. The going after that does get easier, dropping down to Kent's east coast, rolling along up to and around the north Kent coast with a final gentle climb back over the downs to the finish.

I did set my own Audax time limit to get back to base of 10.30pm.. I missed it by one minute. I think I can live with that.
A ride back to home after tea and pizza and I finished with a smidgen under 210 miles.

It looks nice. I wish our randonneuring (Audax) routes were anywhere near as interesting. Do you get extra points for spotting migrants coming ashore?

I wish I had as I would have helped them ashore. Offering them some of the fabulous home made flapjack I had in my back pocket and welcomed them to the UK for hopefully a better life.

One last ride before packing the car and heading back home from Yorkshire. After yesterday's climbing I opted for a nice, flat, "achey legs" recovery ride in the Vale of York using a couple of bridges over the busy A19. I've always liked crossing rivers, so my target today was to cross both the Ouse and the Swale before turning for home. Firstly I set off for Aldwark Bridge on the River Ouse. The first sign I saw for the place made me do a double-take as I thought it said "Aardvark Bridge". In my advancing years I seem to be stuck with a read-only memory, so the village will forever be "Aardvark" to me. The bridge is a toll one,and single lane with queues of traffic waiting patiently at either end. I was pleased to see that bikes go free. I continued on to a bench ouside the village curch of Little Ouseburn to consult the map and decide on my next move. Before re-crossing the Ouse, I followed a track down to the river bank and had a nice chat with a couple who had just landed their canoe.

Once back across, I headed off to Myton on Swale via Aardvark/Aldwark ...

.... and Flawith. The bridge over the Swale at Myton is an interesting one, being on a public bridleway approached by a rough track and turning into a greenway on the other bank.

This must be within a mile or so of the confluence of the Swale and the Ouse, and the Swale is looking really tranquil at this point.

I headed back via Tholthorpe:

... on the way passing an old airfield that seems to have been turned into a rather nice house:

I then hit a familiar road at Raskelf and re-traced my way to the holiday home via Raskelf and Easingwold. It was really quite hot out there this afternoon/evening and I arrived "home" in a bit of a lather after 28.5 very enjoyable but warm miles. Fortunately we had some Stella Artois in the fridge. That's it for this mini break now. A total of 63.8 miles squeezed in between car outings in the Dales and the North York Moors. Lovely. No Strava, just my stone age "Flat Nav" route tracker for you:

(The two main towns on the map are Thirsk and York).

Rolled off the ferry at Hoek Van Holland from Harwich at silly oclock on Sunday morning. Then headed south towards Belgium and rode along the border for a couple of days before arriving at Maastricht this afternoon.

Near Spijkeneese on Sunday.

Leaving my panniers behind in Belgium while crossing back into the Netherlands! This, one of the many Belgian exclaves of Baarle.

Earlier today, back into Belgium from NL in a beatiful nature reserve. Bosland, a land full of bosses, sounds awful but it was very pleasant.

Then, 35 miles or so alongside some canal or other (my research is meticulous). Easy effortless riding mostly, aside from a nagging headwind that I’ve battled with since leaving Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

After riding through another stunning Belgian nature reserve, my route spat me out at the river Maas/ Meuse, with a distant view of Maastricht, my destination where my wife was waiting for me for a couple of days of holiday.

Safe space in the hotel for the bike for the next couple of nights before I head off to the German/ Belgian border for a couple of days before pointing the bike back in East Anglia‘s direction and heading slowly home. Being able to wheel it through the reception of a reasonably nice hotel to its safe parking spot is the mark of a civilised country 😀.
