Has anyone else noticed a massive uptick in intrusive advertising on YouTube recently?

I use the site quite a bit, and it is getting to the point of being unusable. I suspect it’s deliberate to push users to a premium service.

Is there any way around it. I watch via an iPhone or iPad.

Very much so... until I DID subscribe to the premium service!

I am sure that there will be tricks to cut the ads out, but I use YouTube a lot and I think it is fair that video creators get paid for what they do so I don't mind coughing up. (YouTube gives 55% of the total subscription revenue to creators, their individual shares based on viewing figures.)

The thing that still irritates me is creators slipping "and now, a message from our sponsors" in. I almost always skip those bits.

I subscribe. Watch it every day. Plus I use YouTube music in the car. Subscription avoids ads and also allows you to download and save stuff. In the grand scheme of things I think it's decent value.

£160 for 12 months, or £16 is probably twice what I was expecting to see!

I happily pay the £39.99 to Channel 4 to avoid adverts on their platform, but I don't use youtube enough to justify an outlay of 4 times that amount.

I just pay £7.99 per month for Premium Lite. It seems to block all adverts on what I watch so not sure what extra paying £16 per month gives you?

I use the Brave browser on my iPad for YouTube which cuts out the ads, all expect the those ‘ad interludes’ by the presenters themselves which is another growing trend.

I got the premium version years ago, even back then the ads were annoying. As someone else said, I think it only fair that you pay if you watch it a lot. I probably subscribe to 100 odd channels and some uploads are 2 hours long. I'm glad someone has clarified about the creators getting a share of the (£12.99?) fee, becaue I'd heard somewhere else that they don't do that. This makes me feel less selfish.

I don't know if this is right but there used to be browser add-ons that could block the ads, but this may not be a thing now or might not be a thing for iDevices.

The creator adverts are ever present, but for me not half as annoying as pop-in ads. The creators themselves present the ads and it is very easy on the paid version to skip these as well - it even tells you when and where the frequently skipped sections are. But I'd do exactly the same if it were me, and some of the creator sponsored stuff I've actually used or seriously considered (like Nord VPN, Saily, Incogni, Raycon ear buds). Or at least I've seen the idea and sought a cheaper alternative.

Ah didn't spot that, although it appears it has recently gone up to £8.99, but maybe for new subscribers.
The write up suggests that the more pricey option means zero adverts, and I think you might be able to download content as well - how useful that is though I'm not sure.

The Premium version also gets you YTMusic, maybe the Lite version doesn't?

It is £12.99 a month for me. I think if you pay via Apple, they add a fee to that.

I use YouTube Music a lot and get ad-free plus background playback on that, both of which are important to me. I could also download videos but don't generally do that.

I use plug-in 1Blocker https://1blocker.com. It's an Apple (AppStore) system that works with Safari browser (ie only if you are using Safari Browser, not eg Firefox, etc.)

It's a subscription based app but not massively expensive (but a lot cheaper than YouTube subscription).

It works for me (as well as doing lots of other add, security and other blocking) but it's a bit of an ongoing "battle" for them with Youtube in that they imple, ment blocks and Youtube change the way they present ads so it's less effective until 1Blocker release an update to address the new "scheme" and Youtube make other changes to prevent blockers ...

I don't use youtube that much and my main use for the blocker is as an ad/nuisance blocker.
