If we are stepping outside of cycling, then I would like to add the term Barter...when people mean haggle...winds me up every time

That is cycling. Doesn't everyone barter, sorry, haggle in cycle shops?

No, it's the shape of the whole thing that makes it a fork. If you're thinking of the bits where the wheel attaches, I would call those dropouts, although a quick google suggests that some may disagree with me and call them forkends!
