Never really understood why a top is a 'jersey'. Suggests a knitted garment to me.

And bibs are what babbys use so they don't get food all over their clothes.

They were knitted and notorious for water logging.

I think it was one of the Italian designers who started producing synthetic 'jerseys', possibly in the 1960s.

Edit: Castelli started making silk jerseys in 1942.
