Looking at the stage profile from the 2010 Tour it looks like the BRVR ride goes up from the opposite side. The stage finished in Bagnères-de-Luchon according to the Le Tour website, but no doubt others could confirm if my assumption is correct. Hadn't realised that Port de Bales was the Chaingate climb till you mentioned it though, good spot.

I had a feeling that it was the other side.... anyway, I had a plod up it this morning and thankfully no chain problems for me... just leg problems
but a great ride.

Our Port de Balès ride indeed goes up from the other side. It starts at the place where Balès road takes a right from the road up the Peyresourde (from Bagnères de Luchon). I think the Balès ride is one of the best we have. The landscape is incredibly beautiful, it really makes you want to go there for real!

Hi Boxers, has BRVR uploaded any flatter or rolling rides or are they all still based around climbs?

Cheers

Jim
There are a few flat and rolling routes. You can also take the flatter sections of the longer routes as a shorter version, easy to do . I've done most of the flatter sections. Several of the Norway routes are flat or rolling downhills. Look at the longer rides with a 2 or lower rating. :bicycle:

Not flat but today I completed the Flagstaff route. Bit of a hard one, the ride is really 2 in one. The first 6k and last 3k, they take about the same amount of time each. The last 3k is >10% avg I'm sure .

Cheers gents. I wouldn’t mind trying long rolling routes as appossed to short or steep rides. 2-3 hours and preferably no more than 5000ft of climbing.. hurts my old soggy knees.. :B)

The 3 longest ones I've looked at or attempted/completed

Palmer lake 85k distance, 1k climbing. I've not completed this yet.

Bergen 70k distance, 1k climbing, but only 10km of real hard climbing the first 5 or 6 k then about 5km from 30km the reast is quite rolling. I've done this in 2 parts totalling about 3 and 1/2 hours.

Fern Pass to Neuschwanstein 50k mostly downhill with a couple of quite stiff rises, first from the start and then again @ 13 and 30km. No steep downhills, as such, though you need to keep pushing to make progress.

Jim, I tried the Fern Pass to Neuschwanstein ride yesterday and can confirm @theboxers assessment, although the climbing isn't too tough it does roller coaster occasionally. Nice views along the way and you can pass some of your time counting the number of convertible's with their lids down.

Palmer lake is on my to do list, for one rainy Sunday. For some reason I had a brain spasm and rode Col de la Bonette yesterday ... not a climb to be taken lightly ... might do it from the other side this week ...

Fern Pass and Bergen I enjoyed, apart from perhaps the first 5Km of Bergen ...

The first 5km of Bergen is the reason I did it in 2 chunks. I thought I'd be able to complete it in 1 , although slowly. But the first 5k just took too much out of my legs that day. By the time I reached the 2nd climb I just couldn't face it. :surrender:

Looks like BigRingVR are going down the subscription model route in the New Year. 100 US dollars with a 20% discount if signed up in the first fortnight of launch (about £60). More info is on their website.

This more or less coincides with my Bkool subscription expiring so I'll probably jump ship to BRVR.
