How much does it cost to Oldham?
I haven't seen the Toyota Yaris mentioned yet.
I was thinking more of a corrola.

I agree with Vickster about the VRS being an excellent car, I worked for Skoda for ten years and know that if you can past the badge they are wonderful. I work in an independent garage now and as such see lots of cars, Have you thought of a 1 series BMW? I don't know if they are available in your price range but they are no more expensive to maintain than most modern cars. If you want VAG the Ibiza is a better value for money than the Polo and Audi A2 (still not as good as the Fabia) Just steer clear of the 3 cylinder models

Interested as to why? The 3 cylinder models are the most sought after amongst the afficionados, due to their being really clever kit, optimised for mega economy.

Mine's super pretty in metallic race green...and being the estate, it's perfect for bike carrying ;)

Interested as to why?

The earlier three cyl models had head/valve train issues. Timing chains jumped causing cam timing issues, from my recollection of them there was also numerous software updates for them. And in my opinion they don't drive as nice as the 4 cyl fsi models (that may just be personal preference) As Vickster also mentioned, if the OP buys from a dealer the chances are it will have been dealer maintained always a better option if funds allow

I recently paid £4750 for an as new 2014 Fiat 500 1.2, still under warranty, I cannot fault it, it's great fun to drive and it has loads of "charm", very few cars today have any "charm" at all.

Swifts have zero charm but 4 have been in our family, my 18 year old son has a cast off one now, nothing has ever gone wrong with them or ceased to function.
I bought my wife a brand new Fiat 500 which is now almost 4 years old, it's been a cracking little car, no trouble at all. I taught my daughter to drive in it too. They are indeed quite quirky looking and definately cool, both my daughters love it.
