The earlier three cyl models had head/valve train issues. Timing chains jumped causing cam timing issues, from my recollection of them there was also numerous software updates for them. And in my opinion they don't drive as nice as the 4 cyl fsi models (that may just be personal preference) As Vickster also mentioned, if the OP buys from a dealer the chances are it will have been dealer maintained always a better option if funds allow
Mine was under a year old, 4000 miles, ex skoda management car...about £5k off list....but it still cost rather more than £5k  but I reckon you could get a hatch for around that now (mines a 62 plate)

That is odd, everybody I know in the trade myself included hate the 3 pot. I know they should in theory be nice and smooth, they seldom are.
Rarity and the 100mpg tagline helps a lot, I suspect.

Like you say I don't know of anyone in the trade liking any three pot engine. I once had the pleasure of driving a 3 pot Fabia from Bury to the Volkswagen training centre in Milton Keynes. The car was fine once it was up to 70mph but then the fuel economy is very poor, you can't win with a 3 cylinder

Pushing it for the 1.4 twin charge, but certainly a good 1.9 tdi, which is a much more reliable and economical unit in any case.
