Does doing something "for charity" give you special rights?

The BBC are now reporting another argument about queuing at the top of Snowdon.

There really should be a separate area set aside for people who want to take a photo. They seem to think that by queuing they are entitled to an uninterrupted photo opportunity.
No one has a right to expect others to move out of the way so you can get a photograph to put on instagram.

When I used to go up mountains
we normally took a photo of the view from the top

My dad was a keen photographer (albeit not a very good one) but he couldn't take a photo of just a view. Someone (usually Mum) had to be in the frame, otherwise he was taking a photo of 'nothing'.

Wait and see if the Bank Holiday Weekend is fine weather. Then you'll see more of the same, for the second weekend running.

Why not a token fee for going up. With all money raised going to the local mountain rescue. There's more hills than this in the area, and there's always need of volunteer rescue teams.

When I used to go up places like that I generally walked up

There was a sort of feeling that if you had walked up the damn thing then you should get priority over people who got the train up

but I suppose people who got the train up have a limited time as they have to get the train back down

I do remember one place where everyone used to go and take photos at the trig point

but real climbers would sidle off a bit because they could read a map and knew the high point was a few dozen yards away!

Real climbers won’t be hanging round the summit of Snowdon they will be on Clogwyn du’r arddu Where you will such delights like Great Wall, Face Mecca and Indian Face which had its first female ascent a week or so ago.

Those BBC pictures are a bit of an eye opener. If there are that many people up there and they all want to go to the very top bit (the trig point or whatever) then it's only sensible that an orderly queue is formed. It's just common sense.

But if you're not obsessive about touching a particular bit of stuff then I'm sure you can get photos that are just as good, if not better, from nearby locations.

Of course this runs counter to the stamp-collecting instinct. If you haven't gone to that specific bit then it doesn't count. If you subscribe to that view, then join the queue. Doesn't matter whether you walked or got the train, whether you're doing it for a fluffy kitten charity. Get to the back of the queue. That's the price for obsessing over trig points.

I was back at the coast last week and it occurred to me, in the light of all the rescues that have been attempted this summer, that it wouldn't be a bad thing if there was a some sort of surcharge for visiting which goes to support the RNLI & coastguard.

So many people do stuff now just because they have to tick it off a list - see the Rolling Stones in concert even though they've never listened to their music, a safari even though they struggle to tell the difference between a lion and an elephant. Getting to the top of Snowden will be one of them.

We were in Prague waiting to get a shot of my partner in front of (John) Lennon's wall, unimpeded. It didn't happen. There were 15 or so people waiting to do the same, but many people just walked in front of it and got their "pic". There was enough wall for everyone, but the best and most central shot had only room for 1 person.

So, I took my partner's picture and deleted the other people afterwards using my phone technology. No drama.

I think the Snowden problem is an example of a complex transition between the old and the new. The old ways of queuing and waiting, and expecting courtesy to be extended both ways. Versus the new ways of just diving in and sorting the photo out afterwards using instant tech and no waiting. There are still I'd guess a high percentage of the population who can't or don't know how to use magic eraser, if a clean photo is what they are seeking.

If that takes everyone even 30 second each "in series", vs 10 second each "in parallel" then a queue forms. It people wanting to pretend they were up there alone and it was an incredible achievement that causes issues.

As pointed out, phone software can take randomers of photos if needed. I don't see the need, some of you might be in the background of my "on top of Mont Ventoux taken by a complete stranger" photo

No need for a ban. People just need to embrace the queue.

The big sign might help, just need to add "There's nothing special there, the trig point is uninteresting. Your life will continue to be an endless succession of disappointments if you join this queue"
