The classical style:

It's been good for at least 2500 years and still going strong! It's that good ol' golden ratio that does it ...

It looks okay on original buildings but it makes me cringe to see the style used nowadays on upmarket new builds.

A fine example of a style trhat hasn't stood the test of time IMHO.

Looks lovely TC - mine, I'm ashamed to say, is a couple of quid spesh from the offie...

I don't actually have a gold one. I bought 20 on Ebay a while back - they had a restaurant logo on so were preposterously cheap - and have been giving them to people when the thought occurs to me. Might have run out now, but if I have any left there's one with your name on it - I'll check later.

The waiter's friend is all very well, if you need something that can be easily tucked into the slit pocket of your little black waistcoat, but if you have a slightly less constrained setup, this is the feller you want:

How much does it cost to Oldham?
The common-or-garden cycle cap hasn't been mentioned yet- Keeps sun, rain and spray largely out of the eyes, whilst still allowing a decent amount of vision, looks good on the bike, looks crap when worn off it! What's not to admire in such a simple thing?

Ah, but the pens in that picture have the modern cut-off tops which (hopefully) allow people to breathe when they get them stuck in their throats.

By the way - will the folks posting absolutely massive pictures which are 50% bigger than even my widescreen monitor can display please shrink them down to a sensible size first! If you don't know how to do it yourself, go to ShrinkPictures.com and let them do it for you - thanks!

The reason for that is that it is badly used on modern "upmarket" builds. The classical style relies entirely on the use good geometry for the aesthetic. This applies to every aspect of the building, including the it's setting. The trouble is that these modern "upmarket" builds take the classical style and bastardise it in the most philistinistic and boorish way imaginable! Bear in mind that the people who buy those "upmarket" properties are the kind who drive Hummers and aspire to the lifestyle of Beckhams ... I rest my case!

I can't think of many car designs that have endured almost unchanged; the original VW Beetle and the Golf, the original square Land Rover, also the rear-engined Porsche, the Morgan... yes.... er, any more? Even these classics have been heavily modified as technology moved on, under relatively unchanged bodywork.

Lotus 7. Designed in the mid-50s IIRC, still made today. Take a rigid spaceframe chassis wieghing 15% of sod-all, fit two seats and an engine. Sheer brilliance.

An example of practicality and passenger comfort that was sadly ignored in the development of more recent high speed trains.

I'm sure we still have them, albeit disfigured by FGW's pink-and-purple livery, on the Paddington-Swansea line? Shame about the unforgiveable new interiors, though  And you can't get to your bike without getting off the train and legging it up the platform in your silly cleats.
