The tour is on, so I think we are all dreaming of being able to fly up mountains with such apparent ease, when in reality a few beers and the time of day would probably make legs appreciate 'conversation' pace

No harm in riding off the front for a summit though!

Three reps of Ditchling takes its toll you know + a cake stop en route. This is about exploration Martin - not route one afterburners on! (Except when trying to trigger the camera!) 'Conversational pace' has been mentioned in the past. This time around you are going to learn about Messrs Shackleton and 'Great Uncle Doug', among other delights, so settle down...;)

I'll go and buy a comfy saddle then

Are you supposed to do those whilst absolutely langered? Speaking of which, is there an early bar near the Madeira?

Justin Langered? Fosters then surely.

I can't think of an early doors bar but I'll work on it. You're all welcome back to chez moi which is usually well stocked, if all else fails.

Stop off at Asda Hollingbury on the way & enjoy a morning Pimms on the beach???

There's bound to be a Wetherspoons somewhere in Brighton but not necessarily near the beach/Madeira cafe. They open at 7am and serve alcohol from 8am. There are some scary characters in them at that time of day though, even scarier than a cyclist dressed in lycra and just finishing a 60+ mile ride!

Good work, Rich. The last Brighton run saw a poor performance from the Lushketeers. I don't intend to make the same mistake twice...

Ok I know i'm early but I may need to buy stuff. This is the first time I've done one of these long-ish distance rides, what kit do I need? What I'm planing on taking is:

two inner tubes; tyre levers; mini pump; allen keys; spoke key; spare batteries for lights; water; phone (all these things are usually with me anyway) plus some fig rolls; lock (may need a lock buddy as mine is only a cable lock); high viz vest (kindly donated by maintenance guys at work); camera.

Am I likely to need anything else?

Can't decide whether to swap my tyres out and put new rear brake blocks in.

Ta for advice in advance

Yes - those are essential. Well done.
Yes to new brake blocks and tyres if they're worn. I don't think a high-vis vest is a necessity - en masse we are extremely visible.

Thanks. Tyres I'm not sure about. There's no grip left on them but there was never a lot in the first place. Not had any punctures but there's a few small cuts which I'll make sure are cleaned out.
