Serious question.
Will having an authorised dealer swap the components, from new and before delivery, from Tiagra 2x10 to Deore 1x11 void the warranty in part or in full?

Ask the dealer as it’s them who you’d deal with in case of a warranty claim!

Depends if the Deore 1x11 is new, if it’s new boxed shimano stuff, then it would be like for like and I imagine less likely to be a problem for than used; dealer will confirm as they have the relationship with the vendor and the insurance company for liability etc.

I have asked the dealer, but to be honest he didn’t seem sure.
I’ll contact Giant I think.
I suspect that it may be a bad idea and for any small improvement on hill climbing and simpler shifting (without front mech) I’d be better off avoiding the risk and either going for a bike that comes with a 1x (I.e Trek FX4 Sport) or sticking to the unaltered stock 2x Giant Fastroad Advanced 1 or 2.

What’s the cassette on the 105? If it’s 11-32 or greater, you shouldn’t have an issue on hills assuming no health issues.
It’s the lifetime frame warranty to consider and any authorised Giant dealer should surely know what the terms are regarding replacement parts! Warranty on parts is pretty limited and only on new

Would the 1x11 be noticably better up hills? or will it spin out too much?
Will the 105 be noticably better than the Tiagra (smoothness/accuracy) and will it's 2x11 be noticably easier up hills than the Tiagra's 2x10?
The answers to these are all subjective so take this with a pinch of salt.

So the choices are, in gearing terms.

42 plus 11-51.
34/50 plus 11-34

Off we go to https://www.bikecalc.com/

Will a 42/51 (roughly 22") gear be noticeably easier than a 34/34 (roughly 27") gear up a steep hill? Yes. Very noticeably indeed.

What your ideal bottom gear is, is entirely subjective. 34/28 is ok for some 34/34 for others, and yet others differ more. It's down to your fitness, riding style and chosen terrain so no one can say what is best for you. No one ever climbed a hill cursing the fact that they had a spare lower gear in reserve.

Will it spin out going up hill? Maybe but that's not a problem, you just change up a gear if the hill's not too steep. But perhaps that's not the question you were asking.

Or did you mean - will the top end (104" or 42/11) spin out too easily compared with the top gear of the alternative (124" 50/11)?

Well if we take two cadences 90 (say, cruising) and 110 (say "spin out") - these are debatable but I've chosen them so neh.

42/11 you will get 27 mph / 43 kmh at 90 rpm and 33 mph / 53 kmh at 110 rpm
50/11 you will get 32 mph / 52 kmh at 90 rpm and 39 mph / 63 kmh at 110 rpm

Personally 42/11 would be entirely sufficient for me as a top gear because if I'm going 33mph / 53 kmh then I'm freewheeling down a big hill so I don't need to pedal. However I do have 50/11 on my bike and I do use it. (Typically mashing a big gear at a low cadence if that's what I feel like doing). So "spinning out" isn't necessarily the right criterion for a top gear. It's more a question of will you use it? Do I need my 50/11? Nope. Do I use it? Oh yes.

But other people are fitter than me and go a lot faster and ride differently, so it's all subjective.

Another subjective point is the gaps between gears. Some people are real "princess and the pea" types who are unhappy unless the gear is just right. For them a 1x11 would have jumps between gears that are too large. Others aren't so fussy.

Will 105 feel nicer than Tiagra? I don't know the answer to that but 105 does feel very smooth. I love it.

Will the 2x11 105 be easier uphill than the 2x10 Tiagra? No, unless I've got it wrong they both have the same 34/34 bottom gear.

You could also pop 1x11 Deore onto this within budget?

@Grant Fondo got to bork at that price tag.. £1100 for microshift 9 speed!!! Would expect at least full sora. But if it’s a donor bike for a better groupset then it’s all relative.

Giant have confirmed that the warranty will not be void providing an authourised dealer carries out the mods.

I have also spoke to Specialised and they may do the mod, but will not retain the original groupset and offset the cost, so that's going to make it too expensive.
Can't be bothered with having to try and sell the original groupset and even risk not being able to do so.
The Sirrus X5 would be the perfect bike but is no longer readily available in the UK, but can be ordered in for around March next year. however it is now £1,999 so even with a 10% discount will not be in my £1,700 (at a push) budget.

Unless the Trek bowls me over I probably will.
Main decision is if I do go giant is whether I want the conversion of Advanced 2 from 2x10 Tiagra to a 1x11 Deore (40t 11/51) or just the standard Advanced 1 with 2x11 105.

Don't worry, the 2023 model is £1700 with microshift  My point being its the same excellent frame as the £2800 (??) Sirrus 6.0 (minus futureshock).
That one unfortunately seems to fit @Sloth requirements nicely - ie. 1x12 groupset with 40/50 gearing

What do you expect the differences to be, bearing in mind you can always change cassettes with the Tiagra or 105 if you need a lower bottom gear for example?
