This one is bugging me as torn between a few options. (I'll be ferrying - hence the need to start at Gourock).
I want to miss Glasgow and Kilmarnock, fast route but safe route.
option 1 : south down coastal A76 to Ayr, then A713/A712 all the way to Dumfries. along the coast to Gretna and then Carlisle.
option 2 : same as above but at Ayr cut east on Ayr Road (B743), quick stint on the A70 and then all the way down the old A74M which is now National Cycle Route 74.
option 2 really appeals because of NCR74 which lots of people have recommended (quiet roads), but it's not as direct a route as option 1 nor as flat.
Anyone done either?
I've kinda ruled out A76 all the way.
cheers
