Once I was riding my bike, which had very close clearance 28mm tyres, on a newly surfaced road, when the rear wheel locked-up with a large stone chip between the brake caliper and the tyre, I was lucky it wasn't the front wheel. 
I changed back to the small tyres as soon as I got home........
