My experience of them is mainly on building sites though.

Went for the Lizard skin 3.2mm tape in grey, best price was Hellfrauds of all places

Next up, I need a headset I believe - standard one on the off the peg bike is "M:Part Elite Sealed Cartridge Bearing 1-1/8" "

Any recommendations for something similar, they seem to vary wildly in price from about £20 to over £200

I'm going through a very similar process to you at present (i.e. building up a steel frame from scratch) and I've gone for this headset: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190939738138?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 on the basis that it has sealed bearings, was a reasonable price and looks OK:smile:

I've used M Part headsets in the past and they're OK.

I recently bought a Neco headset from Ebay (for another bike), but the seller has no stock at present. That was excellent value - if you're not in a rush it may be worth waiting to see if the seller gets more stock. I emailed him a while ago and he replied saying he expected stock soon: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=221292916036

Wow. memories!

Mrs FF is a Morden girl and my first job after Poly was in Leatherhead. This is about 1984 ish I had a bedsit in Epsom (Burgh Heath Road) and so regularly 'commuted' Leatherhead - Epsom - Morden - Epsom in order to work and have a sex-life. Rode them on my old Holdsworth fixed-wheeler all times of day and night!
When we got married we lived in a flat in Belmont opposite the Marsden, got Married at St John's and had our Wedding reception at Nonsuch Park.
Happy Daze!

I agree with themosquitoking, cycling in London is a rush! I cut my teeth between Morden - Clapham - Elephant and Castle in '82-'84 and loved every minute of it. I re-ran the route some years back and wrote about it here.
Memories for me too. I have lived in Lower Morden, Raynes Park and New Malden in the past. Chapeau to all you guys who cycle around there, it was bad enough 20 years ago.

Thanks Simon

I think this is the one supplied with the bike as standard, looks quite cool in gunmetal to go with my grey tape and gunmetal BB! http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/m:part-elite-1-1-8-inch-aheadset-prod26363/

Bit more than the ones you've linked to. I would much prefer to buy from an online retailer or shop than eBay (as much for ease of return when I inevitably get the wrong thing)!

Are sealed bearings better?

Yes, IMO - easier to get that balance between no play and light turning handlebars. Some may argue that they're less serviceable and won't last as long, but they will last for several thousand miles IME.

Also worth looking for a split crown race - much easier to install (and remove!)

I don't think I'll be doing any installing and even less removing!

The M Elite has a 3 year warranty, looks the way to go for £38. As much as the silly costly Chris King one in orange is tempting!

Ok stupid questions time...I need brake and gear cabling...recommendations?

Shimano long drop brakes, will be adding cross levers (likely to be Tektro I expect)

SRAM rival groupset

How much will I need - don't know if this makes a difference but it's a 54cm frame, 100mm stem, 38cm compact drop bar

Also, there appear to be sundries for cabling too (bear in mind I have no parts)

Something like these?
