Sub-four minute mile hero Sir Roger Bannister also invented the structure formed by the uprights and handrail at the side of a staircase that bears his name, having observed the devastating effects of falls from staircases that had been previously unguarded.
The slight difference in spelling is due to an error at the Patents Office when the invention was first registered.

When that nice Michael Foot was put in charge of some nuclear arms committee or other, The Times headline read "Foot Heads Arms Body".

As part of the Plowshare project, 27 bombs were set off between 1961 and 1973, and plans were drawn up to use nuclear explosions to create new roadways, widen the Panama Canal, and tap natural gas reserves.

The 1962 Sedan test, shown below, left an enormous crater that was used to train moon-bound astronauts and is now a tourist attraction.

Kaiser Willhelm I I (Kaiser Bill of WW1) had a deep seated hatred of the British.
Apparently, this stemmed from the time he was beaten up as a boy, by a local lad whilst holidaying in Ilfracombe, North Devon.*
