WWI was in fact the second worldwide war. The first took place when France invaded Italy in 1898, but was so horrific that Churchill ordered it stricken from the history books in 1941.

That was part of theme started by Churchill's father, who called The Boer War the "bloody brilliant war", due to the amount of medals he was awarded.

In the RN we referred to the First Unpleasantness and the Second Unpleasantness.
Potatoes were invented in the 1700s. At that time cornflour had not been invented so gravy was very thin/watery. Mashed potatoes were a good way of soaking up that thin gravy.
At the time there was an inventor call Fred Bisto who had a brother called Rodney. They tried various solutions but failed.
Just before he died Fred was was quoted as saying "this time next year Rodney".

It was called the bore war, as they'd bore you rigid with tales of how great it was. Unfortunately the meaning was lost when it got written down as Boer in error.
