Halfords (the cycle shop) was started in 1862 by a Mr Rushbrook. He was an ironmonger and a blacksmith. The main tool he used was a lump hammer as virtually everything he made could be knocked into shape with a big hammer and brute force.
As his business grew and he took on more people he trained them all how to use a big hammer to fix anything and everything.
When they started selling bikes it was decided that, as using big hammers had always been sucessfu then all new members of staff would be taught to use them when building or repairing bikes. That practice continues to this day.
