The plot does involve coffee, cheese and (obviously) cricket that's why I went cup and urn..... but is the cup required or is the cricket reference required.... (serious pondering required me thinks)
I like the idea of a knocked over coffee cup with the cricket ball laying beside it. I think that says whats required without going into too much detail.
Instead of using b&w, have you thought about an effect like sepia?

I tried the sepia effect with the cover shown.... wasn't sure. its a trade off between the historical era the book is partly set in and homage to film noire... I reckon I'll buy a cricket ball and some camp coffee (intriguing shopping list) and have another go.. Its going live on 08/07/15 so a few weeks left....

How about a nice clean, simple design.... all in a classy, matte finish with just the text over printed with clear gloss, and/or possibly the ball?

This OBVIOUSLY begs the question where did @Berk on a Bike get the photo was it Public domain/ free to reuse commercially etc? and how about a penny per copy for each of you @Archie_tect and Berk on a bike.... Its going to sell millions..... I tell you millions.... (Cue sinister laughter wahhhh hahhh hahhhhh)

I think the typeface is a big issue. It's too light and frankly a bit of a novelty font. @Archie_tect 's example above is much better, IMO. I'd also consider Monserrat or Futura - particularly the latter if you want a bit of 20's chic.

ETA: I wouldn't consider the book as I dislike cricket almost as much as I HATE golf, but these clean, simple designs are what everyone is after at the moment. They're 'in'. :-)

I could put the cricket ball back in the packet and return it for a credit note (sports direct so no refund.....) but that would be soooooo wrong:whistle: but actually I like it. I have no further use for it but I do like it.

It's straight out of google images. Found it while at work. Now I'm looking again, the same pic has a watermark.

had a play around may edit it a bit but what's the opinion on something like this....... sorry if I've borrowed a few ideas off people ....particularly @Archie_tect , @Berk on a Bike and @ScotiaLass and thanks to everyone else who commented....and the photo shopping is an early effort (I know I've got green grass one side and grey on other side of the ball)
