£55 for a pair of shoes would be acceptable provided I knew I would be able to use them, as I don't know, it is an expensive gamble.My new shoes were £55, I'd had the old ones over 10 years, I think the old ones were about £45.
I bet you are correct, mind you I am not flash with the shoes so only spend about £100 on a pair.

Speaking personally, work boots start around there for a good pair, but I wear them about 40 days a week for 48 weeks a year, plus commuting back and forth,
That is a long week.

I was amazed at the use of "only" and £100 In the same sentence. No criticism of you, more of me.
No wonder they are doing well, we only have 7 days in our week in the UK.
And me, a hundred quid is a substantial sum, I'm not tight, but I am on a state pension
