Each year an average male of whatever age has a 50 per cent greater chance of dying before his next birthday than an average female of the same age.

(sorry can't remember the source of this but I do recall that it seemed to be an authoritative one)

The iconic photograph of Berlin’s fall, of Red Army soldiers planting the Soviet flag atop the roof of the Reichstag, had to be retouched prior to release in order to airbrush out one of the two watches being worn on one of the soldier’s wrists.

A lot of looting (and worse) went on, watches were particularly prized

Just something to think about the next time you put yours on. If you use one.

3M's N95 mask grew from an early 1960s bra-cup design by Sara Little Turnbull. And like any good design, it's had it's imitations/copies over the years.

I knew about the "Winchester geese" (google it folks) but was more than surprised recently to learn that in the 15th century Strasbourg cathedral's bell tower had resident prostitutes working there - they were known as "swallows" apparently.

And in 1608, the Dominican order in Perpignan collected alms from their congregations for the refurbishment of the order's bordello.

More factoids from the same source may be coming.

The Irish Government ran into issues when trying to register the harp as a state symbol? This was because under international trademark law the symbol of the harp and the Guinness label, containing a similar harp were so alike.

Eventually, the state and the brewery were able to reach a compromise: the harp on a bottle of Guinness would always face right, while in official use, the harp would always face left.
