"5 days ago a true British hero was killed in action fighting for our country. Did you know this? Do you know his name? Do you care?!
A smackhead loser dies and its all over the news and all over facebook within hours!!
RIP Corporal Mark Anthony Palin from 1st Battalion The Rifles , '...We will remember them!"

Personaly i couldn't give a hoot about Amy Winehouse, she chose the path she walked, she could have done so much with her life.
I'll save my sympathies for those that deserve it

FM I think you've oversimplified. She still has a Mother and Father, and family. It doesnt take much for people to get involved in drugs, drink or gambling (and one can lead on to another if unchecked)

Every life lost is tragic. Lives that we could have changed are even more so. She will have inspired people regardless of her problems, just as the great poets once did, or our armed forces do now.

Perhaps if everyone donated 50p to charities that help addicts it might help stop things like this happening, but too often we tend to vilify as its the easy option.

i like the way i am being pin pointed here, maybe i could become an alcoholic and drug infested rodent and than be respected... its nice to be shot down for having a point of view.

For all its worth i never wanted to create such a reaction.

im sure you would be grateful if you had kids who looked up to her, this was all i was trying to say, look forward to more insults and motivated threats to my RIP... Good Luck

I won't hold it against you Furkz and I haven't really read all your posts but I'm not sure what reaction you were expecting to a thread aimed at condolences.

IMO addiction is a weakness. There are addictions other than drink and drugs that can be devastating, like smoking, tanning (yes), anabolic steroids, over eating etc etc. does it mean that they all 'deserve' such low regard.

No-one knows what life will trow at you and how you will react to it. No-one can say one of us will not become an addict because of a tragic event in our life. Why be so judgmental??

That's all part and parcel of the military covenant. Members of the armed forces know the risks and are prepared to take them along with the pay. The majority of them see their three score years and ten and a bit more.

Not much different from those who embark on a music career infused with alcohol and drugs. The same outcomes - the same grief for their parents at a premature demise.
The soldier spent his working days hunting mediaevalist thugs that stone women to death for fun, Amy Winehouse made lots of people happy with some memorable music.

Both were good things and can negate the other in no way what so ever.

In defence of Furkz... some of the comments have not only been unfair... but off topic. We should be posting...

It's wrong to dismiss anyone as a 'smackhead loser'. This was a talented woman who didn't survive her 20s. Sadly, we'll never know what she might have made of her 30s.

It is a waste of a young life but it was only a matter of time, she was no role model.

I agree with the first bit, the 2nd bit, really, was it, I envy your prescience and the last bit is probably more complicated than was, wasn't. Most of the young people I know are well able to differentiate talent from lifestyle, though I dislike that word, unlike some of the adults posting in this thread.

she was an alcoholic and drug addict who pissed away her talent and ended up promoting these things to youngsters. can believe i am the only one who thinks good riddance.
Are you perfect? No human frailties for others to condemn?

Me? I pray that my kids never fall into the same trap, and am forever grateful that I didn't.

I don't think you realise how easy it can be.

+1 She is as much a victim of circumstances as anyone else who dies in tragic circumstances.
