Just sitting here thinking about tomatoes. The fresh ones have been so tasteless recently that I have a sudden notion to buy some tinned instead.

Most of the shop bought tomatoes come from Holland. They are all grown in huge greenhouses in a system called hydroponics. Basically they are grown in water with nutrients added so they never see soil at all.
They are pretty tasteless.

For a long time I bought the ones on the vine as they still seemed to have a bit of flavour, but even they have been poor lately. Last time I was over visiting dad's old neighbour, he gave me a dozen straight out of his greenhouse. The taste was absolutely amazing. I might have a go at growing one outdoors myself next year.

Tomatoes are not hard to grow. They really do taste much better than commercially grown ones.

Today's crop.
