washing a windproof jacket...

I damaged the liner of my windproof/waterproof overtrowsers with normal liquid but I've used special liquid (graingers I think) on my montane windproof no problem.

Try nikwax it comes in two bottles one for washing and one for proofing, you get it from outdoor shops and the like, never use ordinary detergent.

No. the windproofing is from the close knit weave of the fabric.

The jacket will have a water repellant coating on it that doesn't like detergent, hence the nikwax advice above. Equally you can just use soap flakes.

But the windproofing will be unaffected regardless, only the waterproofing is sensitive to washing.
