Was absolutely unmissable when I was at uni in the early 80s, and I bought the box set of DVDs to do my trumpet practice along to about ten years ago (I can explain if anyone is curious). A lot of the humour still works, BUT...
The DVDs have a laugh track, which tends to turn sometimes bitter-sweet 'coping humour' into gags - the UK version had no laugh track, and was (IMHO) much better for it.
Secondly, you notice the sexism more, and the fact that the only regular female cast member is both very much 'just' a nurse, and there partially for her looks ('Hot Lips'). There is also one terrible scene where some visiting major (or something) tries to sexually assault a nurse in a storeroom (it's quite blatant what he's trying to do), and the laugh track is used. Repulsive, and I'm no prude. Without the laugh track, it might have just about been bearable, as you could make your own mind up about the intent of the scene.
Stopped watching then, so about half the box set remains unwatched. Sad.
