Mrs W used to know John Mark Ainsley, Paul Agnew and Roderick Williams quite well. I conducted the choir for Howie Watkins' wedding - he married a friend of ours.
Knew them pretty well, in fact: Roddy was in the same year as me at University, studying the same subject, and I worked for a while in the same office as Paul Agnew.

I was at University with Susan Gritton and Christine Rice.

I have also met Sir Neville Marriner, the late lamented Anthony Rolfe Johnson, and the percussionist Tristan Fry (Sky, if anyone remembers that); also Alfred Brendel. And on one occasion I had to ask Murray Perahia for his passport, in the music shop where I worked, when he wanted to put a load of stuff on an expired credit card. (I had to ring Amex, and they asked me to check some ID - I felt like saying "will the guy's face, on about 40 CDs downstairs, do?!")

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Hmmm....

I suspect this thread demonstrates that the value of "famous" is rather idiosyncratic, doesn't it? I have to admit to not having a clue who about 75% of the "famous" people mentioned are.

I have to admit that I don't have a clue who 100% of your 'famous' people are.

When I was young my childcare rota included Anna Wing, Carol Leader and Max Wall. I was in John Watson's motor home when he returned from winning the British GP and I've had to get Dustin Hoffman out of my way so that I can do my job - which involved wheeling Pete Postlethwaite around. Lots of other theatre and film types but that's working in theatre and a bit gossipy. Having Peter Brook go out of his way to say a nice word is one of the highlights though - as is personally irritating Jeremy Clarkson without actually having to meet him, but I managed that off my own back.

I was in the same class as Richard Reid the shoe bomber. My sister was in the same class as Dominic Cooper, who went out with my half sister. Dominic was also dressed by my best friend while he was at the National. My best friend is also often mistaken for Dominic. We were once all in the same place at the same time and it was a bit weird.

Jimmy Saville. And no, nothing untoward occurred.

But I know a woman who told us about a Rolf Harris incident! It was about 15 years ago when Harris was bomb-proof. She lives in Bray and was in a bar/restaurant when Harris approached her and her friend and told them he loved the shirt she was wearing. He told her he was an avid collector of shirts and he wanted hers. Could she give it to him? If she did, he would swap and give her his shirt. She was immensely flattered and took her shirt off right there and the swap was completed. We thought nothing of it at the time thinking he must have been genuine but now, we think differently. With what's come to light, it's probable he wanted some physical contact with her but as attractive as she is, she was certainly old enough then to look after herself and it was a public bar so he'd have to content himself with the warmth off her shirt. And a peek at her norks in the bargain.

A friend once told me how she and her girlfriend got a lift from a neighbour when they were walking home after a party in the early hours of the morning. He warned them they should be more careful as there were some right nutters around.

And that's how she met Peter Sutcliffe.
