To be fair, I think it is reasonable to say that the Duke of Orleans is named after the French city of Orleans. So New Orleans is named after Orleans, just with a little etymological hiccup in the middle

I think people who grow up in the town where they are born , even if they then move away, feel more attachment to their "home town".
If asked I tell people I come from Rochdale because that's where my family live now and it's where I lived the longest during my childhood, but I only moved there when I was 10 and I left at 19. I've lived in Cumbria for 15 years but it would be odd to say I'm "from" here.
I was actually born in Atherton, but I only lived there for 2 years.

Born in Beckenham which was originally in Kent but then became a London borough. So I call myself a Londoner. And very proud of the fact too. Born to my mum who was a true cockney and my dad who was born in Southwark.
I was born in Greenwich (Shooters Hill) at a hospital no longer there, grew up in LB Bromley too

My mum was born in Wilmslow, my dad Hemel Hempstead, my brother Horsham

I'm happy to be a Derbeian. I live in a house on the same street as the one my parents were living in when I was was born.

Do we think it a good or a bad thing to spend your whole life in one place ? My wife has never lived more than 2 miles from the house where she was brought up. Her mum still lives in that same house. She regularly meets up with friends she has known since school 40 years ago. She knows every part of the city, every bus route, she can recognise every school from their uniform. I've lived here for 23 years and still feel like an outsider.

Down a little rabbit hole .... I wonder what the most reused name is in the world? My guess (in the English speaking world) would be Richmond. Wikipedia lists 57 Richmonds including 3 in Michigan and 3 in Pennsylvania, and an additional 6 New Richmonds.

And which city should get the "credit"? I expect most of the overseas ones were named for Richmond Upon Thames, which was named for Richmond, Yorkshire.
San Jose. The one near me is pronounced San Joe's, BTW. 1716 towns are named this.

I was born in Pekin, Illinois, quite near Peoria. It was a large river harbor and manufacturing and transportation center then. Great place to be a railfan, BTW, and huge German American, Italian American, and Irish American communities. I moved forty miles to Bloomington-Normal in the 1980's,where there was work, after college. Married Mrs. GA, then a young college student, and stayed. We don't move around much, my family has been within the same 30 mile radius since about the 1780's.(When the British left.)

is that the in/famous London Borough of Bromley? Fair few old timers from that don't want to be in London I fear. I'm old enough, and political liberal lefty enough, to remember when I'd almost spit the word Bromley after its selfish small minded burghers nobbled Ken's fares policy. No personal hard feelings of course  all the best.

Personally I can't stand Manchester TBH, never been entirely sure why but suspect its a size thing.

I'm far happier away from hustle, bustle, students and hipsters ^_^
here's me trying to be positive about your parts, which are semi mine. Surely there are no hipsters in Bolton? Please no.

One more try at promoting Bolton - Bank Top Brewery - had one of their rather nice 6 per cent creations yesterday with a breakfast (in case folks get the wrong idea about me it was almost lunchtime).

Being constantly on the move ,or staying put, neither option is definitely right or wrong.

Whether it's good or bad is down to the individual, some people are happy moving around constantly, others like staying in one place.

Horses for courses and all that shoot.

Born in the front bedroom of my parents house in a small town in West Yorkshire, I now live about 3 mile away in a slightly bigger town in West Yorkshire.

The pride is being born a Yorkshire man, and if any Yorkshire man tells you he is not proud of being born in the county, view him with suspicion.
