Second and final ride of my short stay in Sussex this evening. A shame I had to drive about 25 miles to find a stretch of rideable coastline, but after checking it out on Google Maps, I think I chose wisely in parking up at the Ferring end of Marine Drive in Goring by Sea and riding off in the general direction of Brighton. Due to time constraints I only got as far as the pedestrian/cycle bridge across the river mouth in Shoreham by Sea before turning back, but it was quite enjoyable anyway. I have been trying to throw in as much of the British coastline as possible in my rides, so this was another short section added. Just the 21.7 miles ridden this evening, which included only about 10 miles of coastline, but ridden in both directions.

At Shoreham I was overtaken by a couple of fully laden touring cyclists, one of whom complimented me on my bike. "Nice Marin!" he shouted. "A real beast". I told him that was a coincidence as that is what I call it ("The Beast"). After Shoreham Fort:

.... I carried on around the headland and back to the pedestrian/cycle bridge across the river before turning for home.

I rode past my car on Marine Drive and around the corner into Ferring ...

Before packing up and driving back to West Wittering. It has been a great short stay here, allowing some nice drives along the coast and into the South Downs. Every evening we have been treated to an aerobatic display by a Spitfire flying out of Goodwood followed by a visit by a very inquisitive and curious little roe deer and a huge dog fox. Mrs.D has enjoyed relaxing here while I nip out for my cycling fixes. I discovered when I got back to the car that I have broken a spoke in my rear wheel. Bugger! That's both bikes needing a trip to the doctor now.

I couldn't ride to work yesterday, because I had to get a purchase from someone too far away from home, so it was great to get out in the evening. I was against the clock as I had to pick up my daughter at 9pm. I haven't ridden these roads in a while so I really enjoyed getting out on my own and being able to go as fast or as slow as I liked. The evening sun was amazing.

The usual Saturday ride for me but my feet were like blocks of ice and I couldn't get spinning into a strong/cold headwind. Fortunately folk who usually sit on my wheel (not that I mind, I often drill it to keep my circulation up), took a few turns.

Annoyingly the forecasted patches of blue skies at 10am never appeared until we were leaving the pub beer garden around 2pm.

Last ride on Gran Canaria this year. Boat from Anfi to Mogan due to the collapse of the connecting road. Then out of Mogan to the Tauro Pass aka The Serenity Climb. The climb from the port is 12.4 miles with 3000 ft of climbing the majority being in the last third of the climb where the switchbacks start and the gradient kicks in, with about 2000 ft in five miles. There are apparently 22, but I have to confess to losing count. The climb is magnificent with lovely smooth tarmac, changing landscapes, very little traffic and stunning views. Possibly one of the best climbs I have ridden.
It didn't feel as hard as Soria that I did on Wednesday which whilst slightly steeper but with less elevation. The final element of today's climb links up with the Soria climb which I was to descend down, the connection road however was really rough. Coming down that surface with multiple switchbacks would have been better on a mountain bike. I was starting to get arm pump when I eventually hit smooth tarmac again. Then a nice technical descent from Soria back to Arguineguin.
Lovely 😁

First long ride on my new frame:

Switched from a medium BTwin 540 Triban frame to a small Triban RC120, "Now with more grey for added dullness!"

Didn't quite set up the components perfectly, had to do a lot of fine tuning to the gears, front derailer and seat angle on the way out, then in Congleton the crank set started falling off. Luckily this happened right near Cycle Centre and they tightened it back up for me, for free too. Looked like a good shop and with helpful staff, worth a look if you're in the area.

A leisurely ride out to Goring, following the Thames path as much as possible.

Upon arrival at Goring, came across a cricket match, most quaint

Then onto Goring lock, looking very busy

Here we have the Church of Saint Mary in Streatley

And the Bull at Streatley. Visited this landmark pub on many occasions over the years, but not this time

Decided to go back to Reading by road, as the second half of the journey, from Whitchurch to Goring, was not pleasant. Path very steep in places, and very bumpy - a rare occasion where full suspension would be nice.

Oh bugger...back we go.

Nice weather, spotted a nice (we think) oak eggar moth caterpillar, maybe 50mm long

Yet another glorious day in northwest England. I headed out on a ride to scale two significant hills at the northern edge of Bowland. Both reach over 400 masl and I’m starting from close to the coast. I went out through Wray into a north easterly headwind which took the edge off the early morning temperatures. It soon warmed up as the sun began to rise and I began to climb. The first summit was Bowland Knotts, reached along deserted roads listening to curlew, skylarks and meadow pipits. The descent to Gisburn Forest is tricky due to the dreadful road conditions. Lunch was had in Slaidburn, who were gearing up to crown their May Queen with a brass band limbering up. I left the village climbing again almost immediately up the ripples that defend the main climb up the Hodder to Cross ‘o’ Greet. Another fantastic spot to contemplate emptiness. A rapid descend back toward Wray and home. 93 km with1400 m of climbing.

Pictures of Ingleborough, views from Bowland Knotts, cotton grass in flower and the descent to Gisburn.
