Love the results categories. I'd certainly qualify for the " Heavy Half " as I'm a bit of a porker nowadays 😁

Very impressive!

My run this evening was one of my slowest ever… but it did involve a lot of ups and downs, including a kilometre at 20%! In fact, 525m / 10.25km (/2) is an average gradient of more than 10% 😳

I’m back at the running - I got ChatGPT to throw me together a training plan based on my current 5k seasons best and the time that I’d like to target. Been running three sessions a week and still doing some cycling but I might up it to a fourth session and add in some strength training.

Spotted your runs on Strava - I take it your in Costa Rica for a holiday or is this some virtual running software to fool us 😃

Yeah, it’s stunning here but (i) in the mountains the roads are absurdly steep and (ii) here at the coast it’s ridiculously hot.

My Son Brandon who’s on the up-and-up being new to all this / training hard: finished 8th in the very warm 😳 Great Yarmouth 1/2 Marathon today; in a time of 1.18.55 - beating his last 1/2 Marathon by 12 minutes.

I’m no runner - but what I did see was he was the least tired / knackered of the top 15 or 20 too. I think he’s got some in reserve yet…..🤷‍♂️

Perhaps I should join a running forum for more support.
Here's the situation, I was knocked off the bike last Wednesday, resulting in lots of cuts and bruises, a broken nose, skull fractures, three days in hospital, the wife wants me to stop cycling, which is probably the right call, my last serious off was ten years ago, I don't want another.
I will get rid of all the bikes so I am not tempted, but I will have to replace it with something, running came to mind, I have done lots in the past but not much since my off ten years ago, as I damaged my knee, I am old now 73, is it too late to revive my running career? I was an Orienteer for most of my life, that might be a way back in, also my son does park runs and suggested I try them, it all depends on the knees, there is nothing as exhilarating as running in the country side away from the roads, you never know I may venture back onto the fells, I did several fell races when younger always good fun, but maybe a step too far nowadays.

I dabble off and on with running. I need to drop some weight so I can enjoy it more without having to work so hard. I think I prefer running to cycling as it feels safer to me, even on the roads as you are running on the right and seeing traffic coming towards you. At least if some dozy driver isn’t paying attention there is usually a verge to hop onto. Trail running is certainly lovely, but all my lumbar disc/sciatic nerve damage seems to affect how much I pick my feet up and I’m inclined to trip easily so prefer the roads.

I’m 66 and still finding it ok and know of others in their early to mid 70s that still seem to enjoy it.

If you’ve not done any for a while, just be prepared to start slowly and build the miles very gradually and I’m sure you will get back into it.

Thanks for the encouragement Mo, I have memories of spectacular runs and quite looking forward to rekindling some of those, age wise I still know a few from my old running days, some older than me who still run, so it all depends how my legs hold up.

He’s just joined a local club - and trains with them / getting coaching twice a week.

He’s aiming / hoping to be more of a 1/2 and full Marathon guy: but has scraped into the 16’s with a 16.50 for the 5k. Good luck to your Son on that 🙏

I’m not sure how serious he’s going / wants to be. And I’m far from being a glittery eyed / pushy parent. But as someone who earned a living from playing sport professionally for 16 or so years - I have a fair idea there’s lots of room for him to improve in not much time if he applies himself. I’m not sure he’s willing to give up / dedicate / push himself hard right now though. Favouring his career. Maybe rightly so……

Wow, that's some great progress.

Since coming back from holiday and getting over a little illness I had at the end of it, I've been concentrating more on cycling to rebuild my fitness for the coming hillclimb racing season than running. I've been out running 3 times since.

So I can't see myself getting into the 16s this year - my fallback running goal is a >80% WAVA parkrun, which for me would be 17:25, and would be a smidge faster at 44 than my PB when I was 33. I'd need to find a fast course to do it. It's complicated by having to take my son to lifesaving classes at 10am on Saturdays - I could just about get to Stafford for Isabel Trail and be back to Uttoxeter in time.
